Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 17: October, 1942 That the Alumni will approve this procedure, we do not doubt. This does not mean that the Alumni Fund is any less important than heretofore, on the contrary it is Of greater importance, Since there-will be, by reason Of the demands of the War, a considerable falling Ofi in the number Of Students in attendance the approaching session. That means, of course, the loss Of revenue. NO reason is seen, however, with the reduced cost of Operating the Fund, why there should not be realized a net sum equal to, if not greater. Than, the sum realized last year. The college is making a tremendous contribution to our armed forces. Approximately 30 per cent Of our living Alumni are in some branch of the service. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 17: January, 1943 The Fund was headed up this year by that loyal and energetic Alumnus, Dr. H. Wallace Blanton, of Richmond, and while much was confidently expected of him, the result surpassed those expectations. Approximately has been secured in cash or pledges coming from about 800 contributors as against something in excess of from 850 contributors last year. The fact that the number of contributors is a little less than that of last year is easily explained in that so many of our younger Alumni are in the armed forces and scattered over both hemispheres and were unable to be reached. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 33: January 1959 In Paul Leicester Ford's edition Of The Works of Thomas Jefferson (volume VI, page 23) there may be found a letter containing the following intriguing words: Mr. Henry at the present session made an unsuccessful attempt to get a portion of the revenues of Wm. Mary transferred to hampden-sydney. The letter dated December 14, 1789, and addressed to William Short, shows to what lengths the early trustees went in order to insure the stability of the youthful institution! Our current efforts to procure funds are strenuous, but we assure our good friends in Williamsburg that we no longer have designs on them.
