Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association: Spring, 1975 During the past few years, colleges and universities have become increasingly aware that they must pay more attention to where their graduates go after graduation and how they get there. Four of every ten students who graduate from hampden-sydney College will go to some type of graduate or professional school; the remainder will go directly into the active job market. One in three will become managers of services, products, or institutions. One in ten will enter sales or sales management. One in ten will become a physician or dentist. One in ten will become a lawyer. One in ten will enter the teaching profession. Almost all hampden-sydney graduates will become practicing professionals of one type or another. And that is important. But what happens between the time a student enters Hampden - Sydney College and the time he leaves is equally important. Placement cannot be a second semester senior year activity any more than preparation for medical or law school. Growth, career definition, career preparation, and personal awareness must be a continuous, ongoing process. Hopefully, the Center will challenge students to answer these three questions during their college careers: Who am I? Where am I going? And, why? Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Vol. 61: Fall, 1984 On a day that should have been bottled and kept for Homecoming the class of 1988 arrived at hampden-sydney, with cars and station wagons stuffed and spirits high. Both sides of Cushing Road and Via Sacra sparkled with chrome and maroon and navy blue and cream as tailgates and doors opened and shut, as students and parents and sisters and brothers lifted and shoved and carried part of someone's life from one world into another. About half of them moved into Venable Hall, where freshmen have lived for as long as memory serves most of us. But - and here is the difference between this and previous first days of school on the Hill - they weren't supposed to have moved into Venable. Last year's freshmen were supposed have been the last students staying in Venable for a while, since Venable had been scheduled to stand vacant this year, pending the beginning of an extensive series of renovations. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Vol. 48: Summer 1972 Mr. Morrison, Mr. Will, Members of the Newcomen Society, Alumni of hampden-sydney, Ladies and other Distinguished Friends of the College. The honor the Newcomen Society pays hampden-sydney means much to us. We have taken the matter of celebrating the college's two hundredth anniversary in 1976 quite seriously. We do this not merely because we would honor those in the college's long history whose labors and devotion have enriched the life of the Commonwealth and the nation. Rather, and more importantly, we do this because we believe that their accomplishments challenge as who shall move with the college into the third century to strive for that quality of influence and excellence they so devotedly sought and so often achieved. This recognition by the Newcomen Society affords a national forum in which to honor the past as a stirring demand upon the future. We thank you. Nowhere can the ambition of our aim be seen more clearly than in the selection of the speaker of the evening. We wanted the most distinguished man of letters in the Commonwealth. He must be a man of broad understanding and historical perceptiveness. He must be highly articulate and able to convey the history of hampden-sydney not as the restraining hand of the past but as an encouraging thrust towards a creative future. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, Vol. 51: Fall 1973 After twenty-eight years of service to hampden-sydney College as Professor of German, Elmo Firenze is retiring. I appreciate this opportunity to act as spokesman for the College in expressing gratitude and admiration for the uniqueness and high quality of his contribution to the cause of good learning and good fellowship among us. For Firenze these two things, good learning and good fellowship, have always been inseparable, and it has been that conviction, above all else, that has shaped his career as a teacher and made him such an effective member of the faculty of this small, intimate, liberal arts institution. Book Description
Excerpt from The Record, Vol. 43: Hampden-Sydney College; Spring 1969 Venable, located at Slate Hill, Prince Edward County. Venable, a planter by occupation, served as the local magistrate and from this building administered the King's justice and later the laws of the young Republic. A primary force in establishing hampden-sydney, he personally sustained it with his financial support through the hard years of the Revolution. By at least one of his contemporaries he was described as the real founder of hampden-sydney. Mr. Venable's grandson, Major Richard M. Venable, class of 1857 and prominent Baltimore attorney, pur chased and donated to the College in 1898 the south portion of the campus, which until then belonged to Union Theological Seminary. Preparing students for careers in law at Hampden Sydney is as old as the College itself. Of the eight graduates in the six-year period ending in 1783 for whom there are records, three pursued law careers. One of these, William Branch Giles, was governor of the Commonwealth 1827-30. Of the students taking degrees from hampden-sydney between its founding and 1940, 539 became attorneys. Another graduate to distinguish himself during the early years of the Republic was William H. Cabell, a member of the class of 1789, whose long line of descendants has played a prominent role in the Col lege's history. A member of the first graduating class of Wythe Law School at William and Mary, and a member of the General Assembly for a number of terms, he was governor of Virginia, 1805-08. After wards, he served in the state judicial system until his death in 1853 and was president of the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia for a nine-year period beginning in 1842.
