Book Description
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,4, , language: English, abstract: The following work deals with the topic of backgrounds of outsourced production in Asian countries at the example of Nike. According to philosophers like Thomas Hobbes and Karl Marx, humans have a self-interested nature because they first think about their own advantages without thinking about consequences of their behaviour when they save costs. Companies like Nike save costs by outsourcing their production into Asian countries, and consumers save costs by spending as little money as possible. The negative consequences of that are the employer’s bad working conditions which include a poor place of work with too little space, too many working hours per day despite low salaries and the risk of health problems due to work with glue. Moreover, this causes a bad reputation for Nike itself. A more general disadvantage is the widening gap between rich and poor, which leads to inequality and a lack of motivation of the poorer people. Nevertheless, there are advantages for the Asian countries. Companies and factories are created and by that, places of employment are created which means a regular income and the possibility of exportation of products. Furthermore, the factories have to pay taxes which can be invested into a social system and the infrastructure. In spite of these advantages, there is the need of improving the conditions of outsourcing the production.

Book Description
Examination Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 9, language: English, abstract: In the last 10-12 years the Offshoring strategy became very popular. Companies increased to outsource parts of their processes and services to low-wage countries such as India or Czech Republic. And the use of the Offshoring strategy by the European and American companies is increasing year by year. Today the current Offshoring market size has a value of about 145 Billion Dollars, until 2015 it is estimated at about 500 Billion Dollars (XMG Global, 2011). This implies how important the Offshoring strategy got and is going to get. The reasons why companies are performing the Offshoring strategy are pressures coming from diverse directions: increasing material costs, entrance of more foreign competitors on the local market, higher customer expectation, etc. And companies regard Offshoring as way to cope with these diverse pressures so that they can stay competitive on the market. The biggest benefit what companies are expecting with Offshoring is the cost reduction by outsourcing their processes to countries where the wages are low. But this simple cost calculation by looking mainly on the amount of wage differences does not always function, but rather will lead to the failure of an Offshoring project. There are more costs which have to be considered, especially when engaging with a partner from another culture and perhaps from a far distance country. And here I am going to look closer on one essential part of the Offshoring costs, namely the transaction costs. I am going to analyse what the Offshoring transaction costs are and how they are related to different level of cultural differences. I especially will focus on the question if higher cultural differences causes higher transaction costs. For this I will have to work out the whole basic topic beginning from what Offshoring is to explaining the different Cul

Book Description
One of the most controversial topics in the news is the outsourcing of American jobs to other countries. Outsourced jobs have extended well beyond the manufacturing sector to include white-collar professionals, particularly in information technology, financial services, and customer service. Outsourcing America reveals just how much outsourcing is taking place, what its impact has been and will continue to be, and what can be done about the loss of jobs. More than an exposé, Outsourcing America shows how offshoring is part of the historical economic shift toward globalism and free trade, and demonstrates its impact on individual lives and communities. In addition, the book now features a new chapter on immigration policies and outsourcing, and advice on how individuals can avoid becoming victims of outsourcing. The authors discuss policies that countries like India and China use to attract U.S. industries, and they offer frank recommendations that business and political leaders must consider in order to confront this crisis—and bring more high-paying jobs back to the U.S.A.

Book Description
Modern Labor Economics: Theory and Public Policy, now in its fourteenth edition, continues to be the leading text for one-semester courses in labor economics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It offers a thorough overview of the modern theory of labor market behavior and reveals how this theory is used to analyze public policy. Designed for students who may not have extensive backgrounds in economics, the text balances theoretical coverage with examples of practical applications that allow students to see concepts in action. The authors believe that showing students the social implications of the concepts discussed in the course will enhance their motivation to learn. Consequently, this text presents numerous examples of policy decisions that have been affected by the ever-shifting labor market. This new edition continues to offer the following: a balance of relevant, contemporary examples coverage of the current economic climate an introduction to basic methodological techniques and problems tools for review and further study This fourteenth edition presents updated data throughout and a wealth of new examples, such as the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, gig work, nudges, monopsony power in the technology industry, and the effect of machine learning on inequality. Supplementary materials for students and instructors are available on the book’s companion website.

Book Description
Services – from information technology to research to finance – are now as subject to international trade as goods have been for decades. What are the labor market consequences of the recent surge in services offshoring? While offshoring has traditionally been found to affect only less-skilled workers in industrialized countries, this study finds that services offshoring also has negative consequences for high-skilled workers. Focusing on the case of Germany, Deborah Winkler shows how services offshoring has grown, who is most affected and what policy makers can do. Winkler measures the impact of services offshoring on German productivity, employment, and employment structure. She provides a well-balanced synthesis of theoretical insights, detailed empirical analysis, and economic policy recommendations. Although her main focus is on the case of Germany, many insights are also applicable to other developed countries.
