Book Description
Excerpt from The Railways of Great Britain and Ireland: Practically Described and Illustrated Yet, so it is; we go on improving: canals and turnpike-roads have, as it were, had their day, and now must yield the palm to that greatest achievement of modern times, the iron railway. We humbly venture an opinion, that the general introduction of railways, in con junction with that of the mighty steamers which ride swiftly and majestically over the troubled ocean, is the preparatory means where by the civilisation of the whole world will eventually be accomplished. Time, to those blessed with the advantages of railways, is, as it were, of thrice its former value; while money, considered relatively, is already increased in a two-fold ratio: and the day is not far distant when the means of railway travelling - looking to the increasing facilities and improvements which are constantly taking place - will be yet much more within the reach of the humblest classes of the people. Book Description
Excerpt from War Administration of the Railways in the United States and Great Britain This monograph is subject to all the limitations that arise when one attempts to write history in medias res. In Great Britain a law had been on the statute book since 1871 which provided for the method of railway management in case of war and for the financial arrangement under which the rail ways should be operated. The organization of railway execu tiyes which is now operating the British railways had been in existence since 1896. Therefore, it was a relatively simple mat ter to put the machinery in motion when the emergency arose and there have been few problems since of a fundamental char acter. Yet even so it would be impossible to say that our de scription is altogether complete or well balanced and that it does not fail to present some significant fact or phase of the situation. Many gaps will be discovered that are due to the impossibility of obtaining information during the war, and especially to the silence of the British government regarding many of its internal dealings under war conditions. Book Description
Excerpt from American Railways The greater part of the matter contained in the following pages appeared in a series of thirteen articles published in The Times between January 5 and June 5, 1903, under the heading of "American Railways," the facts given having been collected during a four months' tour of the United States, made in the winter of 1902-3, and representing a total of about 9000 miles of railway travelling on the American continent. For the purposes of the present work, however, I have considerably expanded a number of the original articles, and have added several fresh ones - such as "On the Cars," "In the Rockies," "A Mining Camp Railway in Colorado," and "The Santa Fe Trail" - together with sections given in Chapter XIX., "Miscellaneous," under the headings: "The Capture of the Small Shareholder," "The Suburban Traffic Problem at Chicago," "Luggage and Parcels," "The Policy of Combination," "Ton-Mileage Statistics," and "Promotions of Staff in Railway Service." Book Description
Excerpt from Railway Rescue: A Letter Addressed to the Directorates of Great Britain IT is the fashion for those who imagine they have something to say on railway subjects, to address themselves to the shareholders, I prefer to speak to you, having come to the conclusion that shareholders are practically an arithmetical nil - a fluctuating body of sheep-men, here to day and gone to-morrow; now jumping through a hedge-gap into a rich pasture, and anon floundering in an impracticable marsh, without the Wit to understand that the pasture of this quarter may be the marsh of next quarter, and vice versa. In short, they merely play the game of follow my leader at the sport of chance. They are a passive and not an active body, buying when shares are up in the market, and selling when they are down. They are in short that nobody, the public, whom all active men, with intellectual faculties alert, and moral facal ties dormant, consider to be their oyster, which they, not with sword, as in the olden time - but with cunning, after modern fashion, will open. You, gentlemen, for the most part are not sheep. You know what you want and seek it, after the most approved methods the law has left at your disposal. You want railways to prosper, but the law says they shall not prosper by direct courses, and, therefore, areyou as ill-used a body of men as any in the British Empire. And thus are railways made at double their proper cost, and from your inability to pay large dividends on wasted capital, your shareholders, who are unlucky in their speculations, conceive them selves privileged to abuse you, and none more so than those comparatively few, not sheep-men, but wolf-men, who have bought at half-price the property of the original railway makers. And with a good dividend on their real capital, represent themselves as injured innocents on their nominal holdings. Book Description
Excerpt from British Railways and the Great War, Vol. 1: Organisation, Efforts, Difficulties and Achievements On the announcement being made in the House of Commons in july, 1916, that the Government had arranged 'for the writing of an official history of the war, the Author revived the question'as to a history of the part that British Railways were taking in the war, and facilities were then afforded to him for the making of the necessary researches and for the collection of the essential information, a certain amount of which, however, as regarded the earlier preparations of the British railways for war, in accordance with the dictates of ordinary State policy, had already been given by him in The Rise of rail-power.
