Pages : 233
Book Description
In the course of a career thinking and writing about art, Martin Gayford has travelled all over the world both to see works of art and to meet artists. Gayfords journeys, often to fairly inaccessible places, involve frustrations and complications, but also serendipitous encounters and outcomes, which he makes as much a part of the story as the final destination. Entertaining and informative, Gayford includes trips to see Brancusis Endless Column in Romania, prehistoric cave art in France, the museum island of Naoshima in Japan, the Judd Foundation in Marfa, Texas, and a Roni Horn work in Iceland. Interwoven with these accounts are journeys to meet artists Robert Rauschenberg in New York, Marina Abramovic in Venice, Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris or travels with artists, such as a trip to Beijing with Gilbert & George. These encounters not only provide insights into the way artists approach and think about their art but also reveal the importance of their personal environments. And in the process, Gayford discusses how these meetings have impacted on his own evolving ideas and tastes.

The Invisible Art
Author: Christopher Hurst
Publisher: C. HURST & CO. PUBLISHERS
ISBN: 9781850655879
Category : Books
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
"Drawing on his long 'hands-on' experience, Christopher Hurst takes the reader, in the first part, on an analytical journey through a typical scholarly book from start to finish, missing out nothing (including illustrations, maps and tables). A central section is devoted to the use and abuse of the English language. The second part is specifically about the publisher's editorial role, both in relation to authors and in seeing the book through from unedited script to finished volume, including externals like the cover, binding and paper. Finding the right title and cover design, and striking the right balance in the periodical catalogue, are discussed under the heading 'Sending Signals'. Occasional disasters, and measures necessary to avoid them, are not overlooked. The overlap of editorial and legal functions is dealt with in the final section." "This vademecum to the publisher's craft should appeal beyond the author's fellow-professionals to book people generally."--BOOK JACKET.

Old In Art School
Author: Nell Painter
Publisher: Catapult
ISBN: 1640090614
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 343
Book Description
A finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, this memoir of one woman's later in life career change is “a smart, funny and compelling case for going after your heart's desires, no matter your age” (Essence). Following her retirement from Princeton University, celebrated historian Dr. Nell Irvin Painter surprised everyone in her life by returning to school––in her sixties––to earn a BFA and MFA in painting. In Old in Art School, she travels from her beloved Newark to the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design; finds meaning in the artists she loves, even as she comes to understand how they may be undervalued; and struggles with the unstable balance between the pursuit of art and the inevitable, sometimes painful demands of a life fully lived. How are women and artists seen and judged by their age, looks, and race? What does it mean when someone says, “You will never be an artist”? Who defines what an artist is and all that goes with such an identity, and how are these ideas tied to our shared conceptions of beauty, value, and difference? Bringing to bear incisive insights from two careers, Painter weaves a frank, funny, and often surprising tale of her move from academia to art in this "glorious achievement––bighearted and critical, insightful and entertaining. This book is a cup of courage for everyone who wants to change their lives" (Tayari Jones, author of An American Marriage).

Jean-Baptiste-Pierre LeBrun
Author: Bette W. Oliver
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 0761870288
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 109
Book Description
Jean-Baptiste Pierre LeBrun's life was marked by his intense interest in art, first as an artist, and then from 1770 until his death in 1813, as an art dealer/connoisseur and as a participant in the transformation of the Louvre into a national museum during the French Revolution. He managed to accommodate whichever regime assumed power, from monarchy to republic to empire. He married the artist Elisabeth Vigée in 1776 and together they figured prominently in the pre-revolutionary cultural world of Paris. LeBrun travelled widely, buying art for his gallery and contributing to a number of aristocratic collections. His expertise in attributions of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings was acknowledged internationally, while his reference work on the subject was considered the most comprehensive ever written. LeBrun, the grand-nephew of the illustrious artist Charles LeBrun, became one of the most successful art dealers in Paris. He played an active role in the politics of art between 1789 and 1802, serving as an expert-commissioner in restoration at the national museum. His inventories of artworks, confiscated from all over Europe by Napoleon's armies, have provided a valuable record of the development of the French national museum. In addition, his inventories have been useful in the identification and recovery of Nazi confiscations during World War II. LeBrun's accomplishments during a tumultuous period of political and artistic change present evidence of his contributions to the concept of the modern art museum, notably in the areas of conservation, restoration, and arrangement.
