That raised for me a number of problems which I have tried to answer and in part have answered to my own satisfaction. On the more theoretical sides much has been suggested by the writings of Graham Wallas and his school. The position taken appears, now that the work is finished, to be a compromise between the position of MacDougall, with his great insistence on immediate instinct, and that taken by Trotter who finds all social phenomena explained by the fear of the individual for the social whole, with the consequent dominance of convention. I have shown that the social responses are in part due to each of these forces. They begin in a rudimentary way as instincts and are then determined by conventions and ideals developed through experience and imposed upon the group by the "herd instinct." Book Description
Excerpt from Fragments of Political Science on Nationalism and Inter-Nationalism The process of nationalizing the many dialects and jargons had begun in some countries - geographically marked as countries, but wholly unnationalized otherwise - at an earlier time. Dante, singing in the Tuscan dialect, raised it thus to the dignity of the language for all Italy, as later Luther by his own translation of the Bible, made his dialect the German language; and Dante, the greatest poet of his country, which he calls Italia mia oli dolor ostello (the very inn of grief cause torn to pieces and lacking her destined nationality, be came thus the first nationalizer of Italy in the thirteenth and at the beginning of the fourteenth century - five hundred years before Cavour; and now only has Germany made a vigorous movement toward her political nationalization, in which may Heaven bless her leaders' boldest acts. Book Description
Excerpt from Patriotism and the New Internationalism The first question which the modern educator who loves his country asks is: What does America most need to-day? No one can answer this whose study of past history has not been guided by a sound philosophy or who lacks insight to interpret the kaleidoscopic changes in the marvelous, romantic Vision of the world which is daily unrolled before him in the history that is now in the making.
