C., Dec. 31, 1890 It may be doubted whether among the one hundred and eighty non-catholic colleges of America out of the two hun dred and ten which I am considering, there are a score that Offer the student as condensed and effective a statement re specting Luther and his work, as this which is presented to the average student Of the thirty Catholic colleges. The seventh class, which do not in any way touch Bible or church history, is composed mainly of colleges supported by the State. In five or six instances the State schools, supported by the United States grant, are practically in union with colleges of independent or denominational Char acter, as, for example, Brown, Dartmouth, Amherst, Yale, and Cornell. It is a noteworthy fact that in the most of such cases, while the authorities of the regular college Offer something of Bible study to their students, they seem to feel under obligation to eliminate from the curriculum of the students in the school Of science any study that pertains in any way to the Christian Church or religion. Brown University seems to be an exception, in that it requires the study of the evidences Of Christianity from Seniors, without reference to the particular course of study pursued. Clark contends, Princeton Theological Seminary, Harvard Divinity School, Yale Divinity School, and Union Theological Seminary functioned as America's closest equivalents to graduate schools in the humanities during the nineteenth century. These four Protestant institutions, founded to train clergy, later became the cradles for the nonsectarian study of religion at secular colleges and universities. Clark, one of the world's most eminent scholars of early Christianity, explores this development in Founding the Fathers: Early Church History and Protestant Professors in Nineteenth-Century America. Based on voluminous archival materials, the book charts how American theologians traveled to Europe to study in Germany and confronted intellectual currents that were invigorating but potentially threatening to their faith. The Union and Yale professors in particular struggled to tame German biblical and philosophical criticism to fit American evangelical convictions. German models that encouraged a positive view of early and medieval Christianity collided with Protestant assumptions that the church had declined grievously between the Apostolic and Reformation eras. Appreciation as understanding is vital to both the teaching and the learning process; therefore, each person's ability to appreciate and/or learn is distinctive, i.e., the individual is unique, and therefore, each person's ability to appreciate and/or understand should be measured/or assessed as such. Quite often there exists a defiance among some students of required courses in religious studies. Some don't see the connection or the relevance with religious studies as they pursue their intended careers. With such existing attitudes, it is the opportunity and the privilege of the professor to explore innovative methods, techniques, and exercises-e.g., guest lecturers, DVD viewings, travels to religious sites, creation of religions (group), or whatever the professor deems appropriate to ensure the student's opportunity to fulfill the goals and the objectives as set forth by the professor. Institutions of higher learning called historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs, exist as institutions that seek to celebrate life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. HBCUs exist as beacons of light, filled with prepared women and men who have accepted and acknowledged the "call" and the challenge to further serve humankind as teachers-role models, demonstrating excellence. "To whom much is given, much is required" (Luke 12:48).
