Book Description
Excerpt from Physiology of the Special Senses Another class of readers which I have had in mind are those who are either taking up physiology as a branch of liberal education, or with a view of presenting themselves for certain higher professional examinations. In either case a somewhat more detailed knowledge of physiology is required than can be obtained from the general text books of the subject, while time hardly permits of much use being made of original sources of information. The necessity in such cases arises for books intermediate between the text-book and the original memoir. In most branches of physiology this want is abundantly supplied, but I am not acquainted with any such aids to study in the case of the senses. This book may help to fill the gap. Book Description
Excerpt from The Senses and the Intellect While endeavouring to present in a methodical form all the important facts and doctrines bearing upon mind, considered as a branch of science, I have seen reason to adopt some new Views, and to depart in a few instances from the most usual arrangement of the topics. Conceiving that the time has now come when many of the striking discoveries of Physiologists relative to the nervous system should find a re cognised place in the Science of Mind, I have devoted a separate chapter to the Physiology of the Brain and Nerves. Book Description
Excerpt from The Principles of Physiology This is in no sense a Text Book. It is rather anattempt to state the leading principles and facts of physiology, and more especially of human physiology, in such a way as will be understood by an intelligent reader who has had no special scientific training. If the perusal of this little book leads the reader to Wish to know more of this fascinating science, which, in a sense, is the meeting-point of many sciences, he is referred to the Bib. Book Description
Excerpt from The Physiology of Man, Vol. 5 of 5: Designed to Represent the Existing State of Physiological Science, as Applied to the Functions of the Human Body; Special Senses; Generation The present volume completes the task, begun eleven years ago, of preparing a work, intended to represent the existing state of physiological science, as applied to the f unc tions of the human body. The kindly reception which the first four volumes have received has done much to sustain the author in an undertaking, the magnitude of which he has appreciated more and more as the work has progressed. Book Description
Excerpt from On the Sense of Touch, or Physiology and Philosophy Opposed to Materialism and Atheism Consciousness it must be recollected is always restricted in such dis eussions as we are engaged in, to our being aware of the existence of a sensation and excludes every subsequent affection of the mind. Thus defined, it obviously cannot be otherwise than true, while perceptions and inferences which are frequently confounded with it may be as we shall hereafter see, are, occasionally, false. Book Description
Excerpt from An American Text-Book of Physiology, Vol. 2: Muscle and Nerve; Central Nervous System; The Special Senses; Special Muscular Mechanisms; Reproduction The actual nmennt of material in the book remains substantially the same as in the first edition, although, naturally, very many changes have been made. Even in the short time that has elapsed since the appearance of the first edition there has been much progress in physiology, as the result of the constant activity of experimenters in this and the related sciences in all parts of the world, and an effort has been made by the various contributors to keep pace with this progress. Statements and theories that have been shown to be mung or improbable have been eliminated, and the new facts discovered and the newer points of view have been incorporated so far as possible. Such changes are found scattered throughout the book. The only distinctly new matter that can be referred to specifically is found in the section upon the Central Nervous System, and in a short section upon the modern ideas and nomenclature of physical chemistry, with reference especially to the processes of osmosis and diffusion. The section dealing with the Central Nervous System has been recast in large part, with the intention of making it more suitable to the actual needs of medical students; while a brief presen tation of some of the elementary conceptions of physical chemistry seems to be necessary at the present time, owing to the large part that these views are taking in current discussions in physiological and medical literature.
