Book Description
Excerpt from The Physical Geography of Worcester Massachusetts Standing at the summit of Vernon Street hill and looking westward and northwestward, we overlook the deep valley bordered on one side by Millbury Street and on the other by Southbridge Street, and see beyond the higher land, along the crest of which is Main Street from May Street to New Worcester hill; and, still more distant, rising from this, a rolling, billowy area looking as if the surface of the earth had been raised into great dome-like waves, and there transfixed; and finally we see, in the distant background, the highlands of Leicester and Paxton, along the summit of which we trace the horizon with its upward curve showing us the outline of Asnebumskit. Or, again, if we stand on an open spot on Belmont Street hill and look westward, we overlook the valley beneath followed by the Boston Maine and Fitchburg Railroads, and see beyond the same billowy landscape with the Paxton and Leicester highlands for their background. As we look at this beautiful and varied landscape, confusing though it may seem, we may justly ask what these highlands, these valleys, these domelike hills, these plains, these meadows, these streams, these ponds and lakes mean. What is the story they tell us? For in nature there is no chaos, everything has its meaning, if only we have eyes to see, and the perception to understand the revelation. In studying the physical geography of Worcester, let us begin near the northeast corner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. If this cannot be easily procured a slate and pencil will very well answer the purpose. Let his attention first be directed to the map and inform him that the top is north, the bottom south, the right hand east, 'and the left hand west. Let him find on the map the town Where he resides, and observe carefully its shape, its ponds, its rivers, and its mountains. All these he is to draw from the map upon his small black board with chalk, and to draw them over and over again, till he can do it accurately from his memory alone. N ext the boundaries of the town are to be learned. The pupil may then leave the map and see what is said of the town in the geography. He Will find the town in its alphabetical place among the towns of the county. To show the pupil that he'can understand the whole matter, and that it is one of his own concern, he may be encouraged to consider what things there may be wor thy of notice in the town besides those mentioned in the book, as mills, or factories, ponds, streams, hills, or moun tains. Book Description
Excerpt from A Geography of Massachusetts: For Families and Schools The subject is begun precisely at the wron end. If it is addressed to the understanding of the young earner, this arrangement seems to presume, that he will take a deeper interest in, and better comprehend the general features of the world, embracing its lar est mountains and rivers, and the characters of nations, 0 whose existence he has never before heard, than of the roads, hills, and rivers of his own neighborhood, and the boundaries of his own town, county, or state. Besides, he can get no adequate idea of the mag nitude of the largest mountains and rivers in the world, ex cept b comparing them with the mountains and rivers, which e has seen, and of which he has formed some defl nite idea.
