An assessment of the physical and chemical conditions of the Chesapeake Bay estuarine system indicates: (1) that there are marked natural spatial and temporal variations of temperature, that man has in local areas, had a measurable effect on the temperature distribution, but that the present inputs of heated waters from power plants do not pose a threat to the Bay; (2) that there are large natural spatial and temporal variations of salinity, and that man has had almost no effect on the salinity distribution; (3) that man's activities have increased the frequency, duration, and extent of low oxygen zones in the upper reaches of a number of the tributaries; (4) that man's activities have resulted in large inputs of nutrients which have produced undesirable conditions in a number of the tributaries, but that the nutrient levels in the main body of the Bay are at an acceptable level; (5) that the Bay is being rapidly filled with sediments, and that the fine-grained sediments have a number of deleterious indirect effects on the ecology of the Bay; and (6) that there are large natural variations in the distributions of heavy metals, and suggests that levels have probably always been relatively high. This unique book focuses attention on the failure of current efforts to cleanup the Chesapeake Bay and suggests an approach often used in cleaning up environmentally damaged sites While military munitions sources contribute significantly to the pollution and degradation of Chesapeake Bay, they have been completely overlooked in many of the efforts to restore the Bay. Death of the Chesapeake explores this important aspect of the nation's environmental health. The book also recognizes for the first time that efforts to restore the Bay have failed because of the violation of a fundamental precept of environmental cleanup; that is, to sample the site and see what's there. The Bay itself has never been sampled. Thus, this book presents a view of the environmental condition of Chesapeake Bay that is totally unique. It covers a part of the history of the Bay that is not widely known, including how the Bay was formed. It presents a mixture of science, military history, and novel solutions to the Bay's degradation. In so doing, the author examines the military use of the Bay and reveals the extent that munitions dumpsites containing nitrogen and phosphorus as well as chemical warfare material are affecting the environment. "While there is considerable knowledge about the direct or acute effects that toxic compounds have on a range of organisms in Chesapeake Bay, understanding of the fate and chronic effects of toxics at the ecosystem level is, at best, limited. Just what happens when toxic chemicals enter Chesapeake Bay is complicated by the biological, chemical, and physical conditions which vary with environmental factors. The decision to build a nuclear power plant at Calvert Cliffs on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland resulted in a Iandmark legal decision (Calvert Cliffs Coordinating Committee vs Atomic Energy Commission) and began one ofthe mostintensive long-term studies ever carried out in an American estuarine system. In the pages that follow we describe the major results and findings from studies conducted over more than a decade by scientists from The Academy of Natural Seiences of Philadelphia (ANSP). These studies were designed to assess the potential effects that operation ofthe Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) might have on the mid-portion of Chesapeake Bay. The approach taken was to study major biotic components of the system over an area and a time period sufficient to allow comparison of conditions between preoperational and operational periods within a sampling locality, and comparisons of conditions at reference sites with those at impact sites afterplant operations began. Elementschosen for detailed study included: species composition and production rates of major primary producers; water chemistry; zooplankton, benthos and finfish abundance and species composition; the abundance and growth rates of commercially important shellfish (clams, oysters and blue crabs); and the colonization sequences of invertebrates on artificial substrates.
