This report describes the performance of a residential-scale, completely instrumented solar heating system located at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), Champaign, IL. The investigation was made between January 1977 and April 1978. In addition, a daily profile of the performance of the system and its components is presented for a representative sunny winter day. An analysis of the solar system operation indicated that the collector array is by far the most inefficient component in the system for converting incident solar energy into useful heat. The solar system consists of 20 sq m (220 sq ft) of flat-plate, selective surface, singly glazed solar collerctors and a 7.6 cu m (2000 gal) equivalent hot water storage tank. The storage system supplies hot water for heating a 50 sq m (540 sq ft) building used by CERL as office space. There is no domestic hot water in the building. Auxiliary energy is supplied by an electric, flow-through hot water heater. The results of this research are presented in terms of mean daily averages for each month during the heating season and include instantaneous solar radiation (horizontal and in the plane of the collector), useful heat acquired by the collector, useful heat delivered to the thermal storage tank, useful heat delivered to the heating load, thermal storage heat losses, and electrical energy supplied to the pumps. The application of solar energy for heating a building is becoming increasingly more attractive as fuel prices increase and the supplies diminish. During cold weather, buildings in the Northern states which are heated by gas on a demand basis must shift to hard to obtain alternate fuels or pay a high gas rate. These buildings are ideal candidates for supplemental heat supplied by solar powered systems. The program described in this report demonstrates the ability of solar collectors to supplement the heating and hot water requirements of North View Junior High School in suburban Minneapolis. The program is obtaining engineering data which may be used to improve collector performance and system performance or design. In addition, data are being compiled which may be used to define investment requirements for similar installations. The program is also helping to determine community acceptance of solar heated school buildings. In January 1974 the Systems and Research Center of Honeywell Inc., under contract to the National Science Foundation, embarked on a program to design, erect, and test a 5000-square-foot solar energy system. Results and conclusions to date are presented in this report. The report discusses in detail the collector design, system design, system operation, and system performance. Testing at the site is continuing on a day-by-day basis to obtain additional data on system performance and benefits.

Contributors to this Conference have shown the wide range of active and passive solar heating systems which have been researched, installed and monitored in recent years throughout western Europe and elsewhere. Yet much remains to be done if solar heating is to reach its full potential. The Conference Committee hopes that this record of the proceedings will provide a basis for the further development of these systems. Many difficulties have been surmounted in arriving at today's position. The foundations of the growing confidence of architects and engineers are to be found in the concerted programmes of research and development mounted by ty,'o of the sponsors of the Conference the European Community and the International Energy Agency. Some of the more tangible products of these programmes have been reported here: component and system behaviour has been subjected to rigorous scientific study; new test facilities have been founded; test procedures devised; simulation methods developed and evaluated; design rules formulated and checked against measured performance. It has been apparent here that the willingness to exchange information and experiences, which has always been a feature of the solar energy scene, remains as strong as ever.
