Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families (Classic Reprint)
Author: Walter Lee Hopkins
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781397273260
Category : Reference
Languages : en
Pages : 466
Book Description
Excerpt from Hopkins of Virginia and Related Families Particular attention has been given to the earlier generations and no attempt has been made to give full genealogies of all the families treated in the book. However, a foundation is laid upon which each descendant may build and attach his own line to the main stem of the branches mentioned herein. Due to the frequent duplication of names among contemporaries, the very little which has been printed on the families, and the de struction of many priceless county and private records in Virginia, especially in the eastern part of the state, by the Federal Army during the War Between the States, the work is naturally not free from errors; however, every effort has been made to insureits accuracy. Rl'he reader must bear in mind that the writer is not a genealogist, and that these records were collected during the spare moments of his busy life. It is unlikely that the first edition of any work on genealogy is free from mistakes, for the compiler of a genealogy, to a great extent, must be guided by what the members of the families send him, and this is often incorrect; consequently, the compiler can only be guided by his best judgment, trusting to future historians to discover any errors and to correct them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Feasting Our Eyes
Author: Laura Lindenfeld
Publisher: Columbia University Press
ISBN: 0231542976
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 278
Book Description
Big Night (1996), Ratatouille (2007), and Julie and Julia (2009) are more than films about food—they serve a political purpose. In the kitchen, around the table, and in the dining room, these films use cooking and eating to explore such themes as ideological pluralism, ethnic and racial acceptance, gender equality, and class flexibility—but not as progressively as you might think. Feasting Our Eyes takes a second look at these and other modern American food films to emphasize their conventional approaches to nation, gender, race, sexuality, and social status. Devoured visually and emotionally, these films are particularly effective defenders of the status quo. Feasting Our Eyes looks at Hollywood films and independent cinema, documentaries and docufictions, from the 1990s to today and frankly assesses their commitment to racial diversity, tolerance, and liberal political ideas. Laura Lindenfeld and Fabio Parasecoli find women and people of color continue to be treated as objects of consumption even in these modern works and, despite their progressive veneer, American food films often mask a conservative politics that makes commercial success more likely. A major force in mainstream entertainment, American food films shape our sense of who belongs, who has a voice, and who has opportunities in American society. They facilitate the virtual consumption of traditional notions of identity and citizenship, reworking and reinforcing ingrained ideas of power.

Shake the Dust - And Move on
Author: Marcia Shepherd
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781434335494
Category : Family & Relationships
Languages : en
Pages : 80
Book Description
Shake the Dust and Move on is a positive, inspiring book that reminds the reader that setbacks, failures, and misfortunes are a part of life, but they do not have to dominate a person's life. While there are numerous "Stick to it and Succeed" themes in print, this book is about the power of letting go. It recognizes that yielding can be as forceful as resisting and that letting go of negative emotions and situations frees individuals to use their energy and talent in creative, productive ways. The author calls upon her own experience as a counselor, wife, and mother of three adult children. She reveals how she has personally shaken the dust from some tough situations and moved on. There are also inspiring quotes and examples from the lives of famous people who have overcome many obstacles. The book examines some of life's most challenging issues and encourages readers to lead overcoming lives themselves. This book is based on scripture and provides biblical models to support its theme. It is a concise, easy to read book packed with life-changing opportunities for readers to make their own personal applications. In addition, the author uses her skills as a teacher to provide stimulating questions for further thought and discussion at the end of each chapter--making this an excellent book for personal or small group study.
