Excerpt from The Ordinances of the Clothworkers Company: Together With Those of the Ancient Guilds or Fraternities of the Fullers Shearmen of the City of London Pursuant to a Statute of the nineteenth year of King Henry the Seventh [A.D. 1503-4] it was enacted, "that no Masters, Wardens, and Fellowships of Crafts or Mysteries, nor any of them, nor any Rulers of Guilds or Fraternities," should from thenceforth "take upon them to make any Acts or Ordinances, nor to execute any Acts or Ordinances by them heretofore made, in disheritance or diminution of the Prerogative of the King, nor of other, nor against the common profit of the people, but if the same Acts or Ordinances be examined and approved by the Chancellor, Treasurer of England, and Chief Justices of either Bench, or three of them; or before both the Justices of Assizes in their circuit or progress in that Shire where such Acts or Ordinances be made, upon pain of forfeiture of forty Pounds for every time that they do the contrary." In accordance with this Act the Master, Wardens, and Commonalty of Freemen of the Art or Mystery of Clothworkers of the City of London, exhibited their "Books," containing such Articles, Acts, and Ordinances "ordained and devised for the better rule, order, and government of the said Company," and of such others who used the Art or Mystery of Clothworkers within the City of London, as by the laws of the realm the said Company was "privileged and authorized."
