Book Description
There are few authors whose names can be as immediately identified by a large international public as that of Charles Dickens. Indisputably, to both his own time and all since, he is the greatest literary figure of Victorian England. To many readers, he is equally the English novelist par excellence. Indeed, part of the general significance of Dickens is that he, more than anyone else in the English-speaking world, ensured the triumph of the novel as the most highly regarded and widely read of literary genres, a position it has retained ever since. This edition of Dickens' major works includes, as a matter of course, all the novels and the most significant shorter fiction (Christmas books and stories, Sketches by Boz, etc.). It also includes two volumes of travel writing, considerable selections from Dickens' periodical writing, and his entire output of verse. CSP are particularly pleased to include in this edition, by permission of the editor's estate, the entirety of Prof. Ken Fielding's edition of Dickens's speeches, acknowledged as the standard edition but which has now been out of print for over twenty years. The contents of the volumes are as follows: Volume 1 (606 pp.): Introduction to the Works by Prof. Michael Hollington; Sketches by Boz and other sketches Volume 2 (707 pp.): The Pickwick Papers Volume 3 (774 pp.): Nicholas Nickleby Volume 4 (101 pp.): Master Humphrey's Clock Volume 5 (507 pp.): The Old Curiosity Shop Volume 6 (600 pp.): Barnaby Rudge Volume 7 (737 pp.): Martin Chuzzlewit Volume 8 (398 pp.): Oliver Twist Volume 9 (754 pp.): Dombey and Son Volume 10 (736 pp.): David Copperfield Volume 11 (758 pp.): Bleak House Volume 12 (255 pp.): Hard Times Volume 13 (746 pp.): Little Dorrit Volume 14 (344 pp.): A Tale of Two Cities Volume 15 (376 pp.): Great Expectations Volume 16 (749 pp.): Our Mutual Friend Volume 17 (237 pp.): The Mystery of Edwin Drood Volume 18 (362 pp.): complete Christmas books: A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain Volume 19 (631 pp.): complete Christmas stories (including collaborative material) Volume 20 (197 pp.): Reprinted Pieces Volume 21 (232 pp.): Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices, Bardell v. Book Description
Excerpt from The Novels and Tales of Charles Dickens (Boz.), Vol. 2 of 3: Containing Sketches of Every-Day Life, Etc.; Oliver Twist, and Barnaby Budge Now, as the stern and plain truth, even in the dress of this - in novels - much exalted race, was a part of the purpose of this book, I will not, for these readers, abate one hole in the Dod r's coat, or one scrap of curl-paper in the girl's dishevelled hair. I vs no faith in the delicacy which cannot bear to look upon them. I have no de sire to make proselytes among such people. I have no respect for their opinion, good or bad; do not covet their approval; and do not write for their amusement. I venture to say this without reserve; for I am not aware of any writer in our language having a respect for himself, or held in any respect by his posterity, who ever has de scended to the taste of this fastidious class. Book Description
Sketches by "Boz," Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People (commonly known as Sketches by Boz) is a collection of short pieces Charles Dickens originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. They were re-issued in book form, under their current title, in February and August 1836, with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The first complete one volume edition appeared in 1839. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people, and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish", "Scenes", "Characters" and "Tales". The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative pen-portraits, but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" (originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk"), was the first work of fiction Dickens ever published. It appeared in The Monthly Magazine in December 1833. Although Dickens continued to place pieces in that magazine, none of them bore a signature until August 1834, when "The Boarding House" appeared under the strange pen-name "Boz". A verse in Bentley's Miscellany for March 1837 recalled the public's perplexity about this pseudonym: "Who the dickens 'Boz' could be Puzzled many a learned elf, Till time unveiled the mystery, And 'Boz' appeared as Dickens's self."

Book Description
A young dog, Buck, grew up as the favourite pet of a loving family, in California. But his life took a sudden turn when he was sold by a rogue servant and was transported to the Far North. The cold, wild land was cruel and heartless; inhabited by greedy gold prospectors, savage wolves and even more savage Indians. Buck became a sled dog and was subjected to a life of immense hardship. He soon realised that he must return to the law of the wild and learn to survive. Buck turned to the ways of his forefathers using the cunning, toughness and ferocity that lay dormant in him - he became the strongest sled dog in Alaska. But can he overcome the urge to run free of man's rule; the urge to respond to the call of the wild?
