Excerpt from North Carolina Journal of Education, 1897, Vol. 1 The slow growth in America of the idea of teaching reading and spelling by a rational method, when we consider the rapidity with which it spread on the continent, can be explained by the lack of legal power in the central school authority with us and by our devotion to English precedent. Obsolete methods of instruction in English schools are easily accounted for in the conservative spirit of that nation, which has been, until very recent years, quite as tenacious of its illiteracy as of so many of its other great and glorious institutions. While ambitious young men from our Ameri can colleges flock to the German universities, the American public school teacher, as a rule, seems content to-follow English precedent and preju dice, so far at least as concerns the teaching of reading and spelling, by far the two most impor tant branches in our school curriculum. The a, method still so popular in England was the main reliance of our teachers until about twenty years ago, when the Old English look-and-say method, under the less savage looking title of word method, became the Shibboleth of a party that cried aloud for it as an integral part of the new education. Perhaps the most popular book on teaching ever published in this country, the tables of stone of this new education gospel in America, asserts without even a suspicion of humor that phonic analysis has nothing whatever to do with that the best way to teach a child how to read a printed word is to hold up the object and write the name. Excerpt from The American Journal of Education, 1867, Vol. 17 After much of the copy of Number One was in type, a conference was held with the Rev. Absalom Peters, D. D., who contemplated the publication of a periodical under the title of the American College Ro view, and Educational Magazine or Journal. This conference led to the combination of the two periodicals, and a joint editorship of the Amer ican Journal of Education and College Review. The first number was published in type, style and matter as prepared by the undersigned. With the adoption of the Prospectus already prepared by Dr. Peters for his magazine, modified, so as to merge the prominent feature of the College Review in the more comprehensive title of the American Jour nal of Education. In the preparation of the second number, it became evident that two could not walk, or work together, unless they be agreed, and by mutual arrangement, and for mutual convenience, it was determined after the issue of that number, to discontinue the joint publication, leav ing each party the privilege of publishing an Educational Magazine for which he was entitled to use the first and second number of the Amer ican Journal of Education and College Review, as number one and two of his work. In the spirit and letter of this arrangement, as understood by him, the undersigned resumed the title and plan of his own Journal, and has completed the first volume by the publication of a number for March and for May, with this variation only, that he has given his subscribers more than he originally promised, and in the further prosecution of his work, shall include in the Journal much that he intended for chapters in some of the treatises which were to compose the Library of Education. Tron g notions and bad practices in teaching it seem to have been handed down from teacher to pupil, generation after generation. It is far worse taught, even in the same schools, than the higher branches of mathematics. Many a teacher pursues an excel lent system of instruction in Alge bra and Geometry, and yet fails in Arithmetic. The reason obvious ly is, that he was taught the form er correctly himself, but was never taught the latter. Arithmetic has never held in our schools its prep er place as a branch of a science. And consequently the great defect in teaching it is, that attention is paid to its practice and not to its principles.
