Excerpt from The Celtic and Scandinavian Antiquities of Shetland The history and antiquities of Shetland have at all times possessed for me an absorbing interest; and this it has fortunately been in my power to gratify, during a long series of years, in a practical way, by the excavation of ancient structures now in ruins; by discoveries of remains of the prehistoric age and of inscribed and sculptured monuments of the Celts and Scandinavians who in succession have occupied the islands; as well as by glimpses, often unexpected and curious, of local life in the olden time, which have rewarded the exploration of many musty records.
