Seattle's waterfront has served as a central hub for people, transportation, and commerce since time immemorial. A low natural shoreline provided the Duwamish-Suquamish people with excellent canoe access to permanent villages and seasonal fishing camps. High bluffs served as a sacred place for tribal members' final journey to the spirit world. When the first settlers arrived in the 1850s, Seattle's shoreline began to change drastically. Emerald hills covered with dense forests were logged for timber to make way for the new city. As time passed, Seattle constructed a log seawall, wooden sidewalks, wharfs, buildings, streets, railroad trestles, and eventually, a massive concrete viaduct over the original aquatic lands, changing the natural environment to a built environment. Today, Seattle's shoreline continues to change as the city demolishes the viaduct, rebuilds the seawall, and creates an inviting new waterfront that all will enjoy for generations to come.

Building Seattle's State Route 99 Supertunnel: Journey from light to light is a photojournalistic book documenting the building of the State Route 99 deep-bore tunnel in Seattle, Washington-a historical transportation megaproject. 'Bertha' was the largest-diameter Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine at the time of delivery, and this project is the largest-diameter completed tunnel to-date.The underground drive ran beneath the downtown of Seattle for approximately two miles. This project provided the city with a new safe route, replacing the 65-year-old Alaskan Way Viaduct. The Viaduct was a major highway but was damaged during the 2001 Nisqually earthquake and deemed unsafe should future earthquakes occur. Though intended to be completed in two years, the endeavor was complicated as the TBM suddenly halted shortly after starting her journey, due to overheating and damage to the machine. The TBM was rescued from 120 feet below ground, via an Access Shaft. Once repaired, returned underground, and tested, it continued its route until reaching the final exit zone at the North Portal near the Seattle Center complex, on April 4, 2017. Governor Jay Inslee and other officials inaugurated the new SR 99 tunnel with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on February 2, 2019. The Alaskan Way Viaduct, a city fixture for 65 years, was demolished over the summer of 2019. Now the waterfront is unobstructed and plans for the renovation of the area commenced. Catherine Bassetti was the official on-site photographer for the project. This book covers all aspects of this Project from 2014-2019, including six work zones, all major events, and milestones. Also included are interviews with both key personnel and crew members of many trades. It includes narratives from the Labor Union workforce. Statements include those of State officials and major firms responsible for key engineering aspects. This book includes photographs of high quality and unique coverage following both the building of this high profile underground tunnel and the human stories of those who ultimately made it a success. On February 28, 2001, the Nisqually Earthquake shook the Seattle Waterfront, damaging the Alaskan Way Viaduct, a north/south state highway running along the waterfront. The damage to the Viaduct initiated a larger conversation about the use of this valuable space. The future of the Seattle Waterfront was in question, leaving the people of Seattle to come up with an alternative design for the waterfront inclusive of people, transportation of goods, economics, and Seattle's growing population. After an extraordinary decade-long public engagement effort, the conceptual design for the waterfront was completed in 2012 by James Corner Field Operations team (JCFO). The JCFO design considers the central waterfront but does not introduce new design ideas or connections to the northern and southern portions of the waterfront. In this thesis, I investigated the existing waterfront and the JCFO conceptual design to understand the current conditions and planned future for the central waterfront. I use an exploratory site analysis approach created by Jack Alderman paired with a method designed by Anuradha Mathur and Dilip da Cunha to comprehend the waterfront, selecting three sites as my focus areas for the exploration. The exploration allowed me to analyze the site through diagrammatic techniques and exploratory mapping and create a better understanding of my site analysis process as a planner and designer.
