Book Description
Excerpt from The Law Reports, 1881, Vol. 1 But what has the statute said upon that subject? The 68th section says that, after the passing of this Act, all assessments imposed and levied for the relief of the poor Shall extend and be applicable to the relief of occasional as well as permanent poor. If the clause had stopped there (supposing that the Lord Advocate and Mr. Bolt are right in their contention), it would have entitled an able-bodied person to obtain relief. But the clause does not stop there; it goes on to say, provided always, that nothing herein contained shall be held to confer a right to demand relief on able-bodied persons out of employment. The clearness of the specification must be according to the sub] ect-matter of it. It is addressed to persons in the profession having skill in the subject, not to men of ignorance, and if it 18 understood b those whose business leads them to e conversant with such sub'acts, it is intelligible. Book Description
Excerpt from Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, Vol. 1 The law of 1869 provides for the appointment of a reporter for the Supreme Court, and for the delivery to him of the decisions therein, which are designed to be reported. My appointment under this law, bears date in the middle of June last, and this volume of reports, delayed far beyond the time originally set for its publication, by causes which I have been unable to control, is given to the public in discharge of duties thereby devolved on me. I submit its pages to the profession, in the hope and belief, that the experience gained in the preparation of this volume, will enable the reporter, in future efforts in the same direction, to improve upon this.
