Book Description
Excerpt from The Nebraska Question Book The Nebraska Question Book is published with the belief that it will be of assistance to teachers preparing for examination to get an idea of what the examinations are like by studying previous questions. It is not supposed that the book will be sufficient in itself, or with the aid of textbooks on different subjects, to prepare a teacher to pass examinations creditably. It is recognized that the best way for a teacher to prepare for examinations, and for the work of teaching, is to pursue the required subjects faithfully. In school and college. Most candidates will review the subjects of the examination in standard texts, adding to these as many reference books as they can command. Answers are not given to the Nebraska Question Book; first, because of the magnitude of the undertaking and the consequent size and the price of the book that would be necessary. To contain them all; and, second, because it is thought that it is of more value to the student to work out the answers from his textbooks. If answers were given along with the questions, instructors would not care to have the book used for review purposes. In making out examination questions, Principals, Normal Training Teachers and others will find in this book a rich collection from which they may select their questions. Every question in this book has been made out by the state boards since November, 1905, which was the first year the state had charge of the examinations. Book Description
Excerpt from Johnson's History of Nebraska This volume has been the outgrowth of a desire, not only of myself, as an individual, once an actor in all these scenes of fron. Tier life, but as a cherished feeling of the people of the State, and particularly the Old settlers, that a permanent record should be made of the early days. The men who left their eastern homes and came to build up a new State in the great sisterhood of States were men of no ordinary stamp. There might be, as there always are in such new settlements, mere adventurers, reckless speculators, and selfish persons, but the rank and the file, the bone and the muscle, were men who came to stay. Men who counted the cost, who measured the sacrifices, who knew that they were coming to the wilderness, to the abodes of savage life, that they would leave for a time the comforts and luxuries of civilization, that they with their wives and children in founding a new basis of civilization would endure suffering and exposure, if not actual want; but these men had the vision of to-dav before them; they saw with prophetic eye the oncoming thousands; they saw the fields blos sowing for the harvest, they heard the songs of harvest home. Excerpt from To and Through: Nebraska We wonder, will those of the colony who are scattered over the plains Of Nebraska, tell, in talking over the meeting times when anticipation showed them their homes in the west, and hopes ran high for a settlement and town all their own, tell how they felt like eager pilgrims getting ready to launch their Mayflower to be tossed and landed on a Wild waste Of prairie, they knew not where? Book Description
Excerpt from Nebraskans: 1854-1904 When we reflect that in 18 54, Nebraska was a wilderness or prairie and plain, and that 50 years has seen it transformed into a great commonwealth, teeming with life and industry, and counted one of the foremost of the sisterhood of states, it seems fitting and in keeping with the occasion of this, its golden anniversary, to collect together the portraits of the men who have been so closely identified with the production of this glorious result. Here will be found many of the pioneers as well as those who coming later, have added their quota and are entitled to share in the result achieved for this first half century. The task of getting more than one thousand busy men to give time for special sittings for photographs has not been an easy one. And equally difficult has it been to find pictures of many of the old pioneers, who long since have joined the great majority. And while it is hardly possi ble to make a work of this find complete, we feel that it is a fair representation of the foremost men, who have helped to make Nebraska what it is, and without whom, no history of Nebraska could be written. Whatever may be the value or usefulness of this collection to this generation, it will, we feel, be appreciated as almost priceless by those that follow. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty Years of Nebraska, at Home and in Congress After a continuous residence of thirty-three years in Nemaha County, four of which were with the celebrated First Nebraska Regiment, and eight in the United States Senate, having suffered a sudden loss of health, I found a very pleasant pastime and most genial employment in recalling the early days of Nebraska pioneer ing. My first impulse was to utter Opinions of men and measures. But remembering how liable we all are to make mistakes, and being fearful of doing injustice, by omission or prejudice, to some of my associates, I determined, as far as possible, to become only the re corder of their public works and compiler of their sentiments and oratorical gems.
