Book Description
Exhaustive in its scope, this book provides a comprehensive study of the natural and modified history of congenital heart disease. Focusing particularly on the discussion of fetal and post-natal outcomes, the contributors seek to place developments in historical perspective. Virtually all surgical and catheter-based strategies to enhance outcomes of all forms of congenitally malformed heart are analysed, covering the morphology and genetic basis of each particular abnormality, and issues that were germane to evolving different therapeutic strategies. Using data from the records of the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, contributors highlight the complications of the various forms of therapies and identifies particular risk factors for mortality and morbidity.

Book Description
This volume covers everything you need to know about atrial communications; the pathology, anatomy, physiology, and natural history of treated and untreated patients; indications for intervention; surgical techniques currently used to close such defects; and transcatheter closure of these defects using approved and investigational devices. It also presents imaging techniques for guiding such procedures—including transthoracic echo, transesophageal echo, intracardiac echo, and 2-D and 3-D technology--and using MRI to evaluate patients. Every device currently available, both approved and nonapproved, is discussed in detail along with technical analyses of how to close defects. In addition to addressing the association between PFOs and strokes and migraines, the contributors examine the status of all trials addressing transcatheter closure of ASDs and PFOs. Transcatheter Closure of ASDs and PFOs: A Comprehensive Assessment was listed by the American Journal of Cardiology as one of the "Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease in 2010". - American Journal of Cardiology Vol. 107, Issue 8, Pages 1250-1251

Book Description
There are significant advances in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of cardiac development and the etiology of congenital heart disease (CHD). However, these have not yet evolved to such a degree so as to be useful in preventing CHD at this time. Developments such as early detection of the neonates with serious heart disease and their rapid transport to tertiary care centers, availability of highly sensitive noninvasive diagnostic tools, advances in neonatal care and anesthesia, progress in transcatheter interventional procedures and extension of complicated surgical procedures to the neonate and infant have advanced to such a degree that almost all congenital cardiac defects can be diagnosed and "corrected". Treatment of the majority of acyanotic and simpler cyanotic heart defects with currently available transcatheter and surgical techniques is feasible, effective and safe. The application of staged total cavo-pulmonary connection (Fontan) has markedly improved the long-term outlook of children who have one functioning ventricle. This book, I hope, will serve as a rich source of information to the physician caring for infants, children and adults with CHD which may help them provide optimal care for their patients.

Book Description
Following on from the success of the international bestseller Key Questions in Cardiac Surgery, the long awaited Key Questions in Congenital Cardiac Surgery is the latest book in the Key Questions series to be released. Key Questions in Congenital Cardiac Surgerysystematically covers all the main topics involved in the current practice of a congenital cardiac surgeon, incorporating current guidelines for practice (such as from the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, British Paediatric Cardiac Association and European Society of Cardiology) and up-to-date information based on current literature. Each chapter is structured to include the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, indications for surgery, peri-operative management, surgical options and postoperative care. Possible complications are discussed and the results of current practice presented. Importantly, a section on basic sciences related to the practising congenital cardiac surgeon and a further section on congenital cardiac investigations with many images illustrating the variety of pathologies are included. Each chapter also contains important references for further reading and greater depth of knowledge. The data and body of knowledge presented in this book is strictly evidence-based and is relevant to all congenital cardiac surgical trainees, at any stage of their training programme. It provides residents, fellows and specialist registrars the necessary information to carry out their daily duties. Congenital cardiologists and pediatric cardiac intensive care unit specialists also find the book useful in terms of the indications and surgical management of these patients, as they are integral to the congenital cardiac surgical process. Another important group is the nursing staff, physiotherapists and other professions allied to medicine working with patients with congenital cardiac disease either pre-operatively or postoperatively, as the book helps to give a detailed understanding of the principles surrounding congenital cardiac surgical disease. Most importantly, the book is ideal as a revision aid for residents/registrars undertaking their Cardiothoracic Surgery Board examinations around the world. Although these examinations vary in format in different countries, this book is applicable to all cardiothoracic surgical trainees. Its concise, yet complete coverage of the important topics, make it the ideal guide to answer the key questions in congenital cardiac surgery that are asked within the confines of an examination.
