Book Description
Excerpt from The Musical Review and Musical World, 1861, Vol. 12: A Journal of Secular and Sacred Music On the second floor there is in the center the assembly or study room of the Normal department, capable of containing with ample room, more than 200 desks, and from it, entrance to six recitation rooms adapted to the various departments of their work. On the third floor are the large Hall or Chapel, Society rooms, Cabinet, Museum, and, I believe, the Library. It will be re membered that all these rooms are very spacious, and perfectly appointed, and the whole building heated by steam. Some idea may be had of the magnitude of the enterprise when it is stated that the costof the building and appoint ments, exclusive of land, was over one hundred and forty thousand dollars The people at the east must look to their laurels; at this rate Illinois will stride away from them in facilities for education as fast as she has gone ahead in building cities and raising wheat. I was at the Institution for a few days to give some instruction in singing, and teaching singing, and enjoyed it well, although every night found me ready to rest, for Western men, if they don't brush their boots, keep the cobwebs out of their eyes and minds, and he who expects to influence them must know what he has to do, and must be able to do it well. Let no teacher of music (and I may add of any thing clse)go tothe west to teach because he cannot succeed at home. In my opinion, he will meet with disappointment if he does. Mr. Hovey, the prime mover in getting up this Institution, and the present Principal, is a man of extraordinary abilities, and the associate pro fessors are all men of high standing in their various departments. I cannot see why the Normal University of the State of Illinois should not in a short time be in the very foremost rank. G. F. R. Book Description
Charles Hall?as one of the leading musicians of the nineteenth century and intimate with almost all of the great composers and performers of his time, as well as a friend of the Royal Family and known as much as a pianist and chamber musician as a conductor, in London, throughout the country and abroad, in addition to Manchester. Robert Beale presents a new perspective on Hall? life and achievement, constructed mainly from primary sources, which serves to dispel many of the inaccuracies and omissions that have stemmed, to a great extent, from Hall? own autobiographical account of 1896. His edited memoirs omit much of the competition and controversy, struggles and disappointments of his career in Manchester, and, indeed, hardly convey the scope of his activities elsewhere. Hall?as a key figure in the shift from contemporary to ?classical? repertory in orchestral concerts and piano performance. Not only did he found the Manchester orchestra, in 1862-3 he also gave the first known cycle of Beethoven's piano sonatas. His early annual ?recital? series in London marked a new era in the musical history of his time. The formation of the modern 'symphony orchestra' took place during the period of Hall? professional life, and he was a pioneer in the process, in both artistic and business terms. Having adopted the role of orchestral conductor when it was itself relatively novel, he became one of the acknowledged masters of the craft over four and half decades - as well as continuing to appear as solo pianist and chamber musician, and in addition he was enormously influential as musical pedagogue and educationist.

Book Description
The first extended study of the combined reception of Haydn and Mozart in the long nineteenth century, this book generates new, holistic understandings of their musical, cultural and historical significance in the Germanic, French and Anglophone worlds. It places a wide range of written sources under the microscope, including serious and popular biographies, scholarship, musical and non-musical criticism, and a diverse body of fiction, and evaluates the impact of anniversary commemorations. Haydn and Mozart in the Long Nineteenth Century determines how reputations, images and narratives for the two composers converge, diverge, develop at different speeds, and influence one another. Countering received wisdom about Haydn's reputational decline and reassessing Mozart reception through consideration of a broad spectrum of publications, we hear Haydn and Mozart speaking to the long nineteenth century in more nuanced, powerful, and persuasive voices than previously recognized.
