Book Description
During World War II, the Montana National Guard's 163rd Infantry Regiment, including Company B, played an integral role in the Southwest Pacific Theater. The 163rd was inducted and mobilized into federal service on September 16, 1940. This study documents the history of Company B from its training prior to induction and their return to the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. The 163rd fought in three major battles, the first at Sanananda Campaign; second, they returned to New Guinea, a mile and a half away from their first battle, to secure the Pacific coast where the Japanese held a strong foothold; and lastly, they participated in the Sulu Archipelago Campaign, which led to the successful capture of the Philippine islands. During the final months of the war, the 163rd served as occupational forces in Japan. In addition to the history of Company B, this study focuses on these men's personal experiences. Interviews with the surviving Assiniboine and Dakota Sioux men of Company B contribute to and help create a diverse history of World War II and the American Indian experiences, allowing a new version of an older, traditional military history to be written.

Book Description
“This book gives the history of your unprecedented accomplishments over a period of four years of combat in World War II. They were, for many of you, painful years through which you fought your way valiantly, step by step, from Australia to the distant final objective, Japan. The magnificent manner in which our Division relentlessly met, defeated, and pursued the enemy shall forever be an inspiration to all military men who believe in Democracy and Freedom. “Herein are transcribed names and events which will help those who were not there to understand; and will be for those of us who stood together a permanent record of some of the experiences we shared. It is not possible to set down the full story in writing. Only a hint of the real hardships, sufferings and anxieties which we experienced; of the courage, determination, and heroism demonstrated in alt units, can be given. The full story can only be known by those who participated.”
