Book Description
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Averbakh variation against the King's Indian Defense (KID). Who would not want to have a variation against the KID that keeps White's position completely under control, that is positional in nature and that stays away from dark and murky waters or messy tactical situations? Many players like to play a variation against the KID that bears the hallmark of strong grandmasters and has stood the test of time. This book examines such variation with a repertoire for White and an in-depth analysis of all of Black's responses. The Averbakh variation represents a shift in White's approach to the fight against the KID. Rather than focusing solely on the queenside while accepting a certain danger of being checkmated on the other side of the board, as it happens in the KID in many lines, White uses a strategy of positional control, in which he uses the KID in a calm, positional way. Initially, the character of the battle is indeed relatively calm and positional, but not too calm to land in near-equal positions immediately. White's development schedules follow strategic logic. In the following parts of the game, White generally retains his first mover advantage, in positions where he retains control. Repertoire books on the KID start from Black's point of view, overestimating Black's chances and downplaying White's options and plans. In my opinion, that requires an analytical response from White's point of view. In this book, I will show that, using recent theoretical developments and my own novelties and analyses, White has a serious chance to come out of the opening with a long-term plus.

Book Description
The King’s Indian is a hugely popular opening at all levels of chess. Rather than attempting to secure early equality, Black is fighting for the initiative from the very first moves. White is allowed to build up an early central advantage but Black relies on the middlegame, hoping that the central installations that White has constructed will become unwieldy and vulnerable to a devastating counterattack. In many variations, White pursues material or strategic gains but in return Black has tactical and attacking opportunities. The King’s Indian Defence appeals to players who arrive at the board prepared for a fight. The Move by Move series provides an ideal format for the keen chessplayer to improve their game. While reading you are continually challenged to answer probing questions – a method that greatly encourages the learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of chess knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to study chess while providing the best possible chance to retain what has been learnt. * Everything you need to know about the King’s Indian Defence. * The Q and A approach emphasizes plans and strategies. * Written by an expert on the opening.

Book Description
* The perfect survival guide to the chess openings * All openings covered * Detailed verbal explanations of plans for both sides * Up-to-date and featuring many tips and recommendations * Insights into the 'character' of each opening * Written by one of the world's foremost opening experts The first moves of a chess game define the nature of the whole struggle, as both players stake their claim to the critical squares and start to develop their plans. It is essential to play purposefully and to avoid falling into traps or reaching a position that you don't understand. This is not a book that provides masses of variations to memorize. Paul van der Sterren instead offers a wealth of ideas and explanation, together with the basic variations of each and every opening. This knowledge will equip players to succeed in the opening up to good club level, and provide a superb grounding in opening play on which to build a more sophisticated repertoire. The strategies he explains will, unlike ever-changing chess opening theory, remain valid as long as chess is played, and so the time spent studying this book will be rewarded many times over. Grandmaster Paul van der Sterren has won the Dutch Championship on two occasions, and in 1993 reached the Candidates stage of the World Chess Championship. He is an internationally renowned chess writer and editor: he was one of the founding editors of New in Chess, for whose Yearbooks he has contributed more than 150 opening surveys.

Book Description
Tiger's Modern from 2005 is a modern classic, but has fallen out of date. Instead of writing a typical second edition, Swedish grandmaster Tiger Hillarp Persson has chosen to write a new book on the same topic, building on the original framework, re-analyzing every line, and adding over forty new illustrative games to his unique interpretation of the Modern Defense. The Modern Tiger offers a complete repertoire against 1.e4, as well as against 1.d4 when White continues with c4 and e4. For added flexibility, both a Modern line and a Pirc line are given against the critical Austrian Attack.
