Excerpt from The Military Surgeon, Vol. 44: Journal of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States; January to June, 1919 At the incinerator each bucket of mixed fecal matter and refuse is fed regularly and systematically into the fire. The technique of this process is described later. The difliculty of combustion is not insuperable, especially if the supply of fuel is ample. To be efficient, incinerators'must be of such a type as to destroy completely and rapidly all material without emitting odorous gases in or about the camp. Closed incinerators are mostly used, as in these it is possible to produce a hot fire before introduction of the material to be burned. They are provided with baffle plates, which intercept and divert the products of combustion as they leave the fire grate, and insure their complete reduction to simpler gaseous products. (fig. From the Book's Foreword: Long-awaited, Mary C Gillett's final work The Army Medical Department, 1917-1941, complete her four-volume study covering the years from 1775 to 1941. Although the Medical Department had improved medical standards and practices because of the latest advances in scientific medicine and was making significant progress toward creating an organizational structure and a supply system able to handle the demands of a conflict of any size, its reserves of trained personnel and supplies were seriously inadequate when the nation entered world War I in the spring of 1917.
