Excerpt from The Microscopical News and Northern Microscopist, Vol. 3: An Illustrated Journal of Practical Microscopy Almost before we are aware of it, the year 1883 passes away, and The Microscopical News heralds the fact that the study of the Microscope in connection with Natural History is certainly spreading. We could point within our own circle of acquaintance to at least twenty young people who have essayed to employ the microscope as a means to obtaining a greater insight into Nature's secrets, and we commend these studies to the young as a very healthful and enjoyable recreation. Not only does the microscope enable us to see the degree of perfection in which many minute things are organized, but it serves to show, when used upon beings in the higher state of life, that every minute part of their anatomy will form objects for study. Then, again, the microscope serves as a gatherer for many a social evening: evenings furnishing amusement and instruction combined, and it has this advantage, that it only draws the industrious and the enquiring into its vortex. Our own part in the dissemination of microscopical knowledge has, we fear, been obscure, still we have endeavoured to give our readers the latest information on all those subjects known to be interesting to them. We only wish we could do more, but we fear the expense of enlarging the Journal, or illustrating it in a better manner, will preclude its being done until our circulation is more extended.
