Book Description
Excerpt from The Microscope, Vol. 1: And Its Relation to Medicine and Pharmacy The central part is composed entirely of woody fibre, and medullary rays. The medullary rays consist only of nearly square, thin walled cells loaded with starch. They are much smaller, though resembling the cells of the bark. The woody portion consists of thick walled, short, pointed cells, with pitted walls. They are generally empty and it is the only part of the structure not loaded with starch. There is no pith in the center of true ipecac, though there is in the most of the substituted roots. The cortical portion is by far the more active portion of the root. The woody cord being almost inert. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Microscope in Medicine Except in cases referred to in the text, the woodcuts, which have been carefully executed by Mr. Davies, have been copied from drawings taken by the author from objects actually under observation. In preparing the work, the author has to acknowledge the assistance he has derived from the suggestions of many and he is very desirous of taking advantage of this opportunity of acknowledging how much he owes to his kind friends, Dr. Todd, Mr. Bowman, Dr. John son, and Dr. Acland, not only for the valuable assistance and information which he has on all occasions derived from their instruction and advice, but also for the warm encouragement they have constantly afforded him while he was a pupil, and ever since. Book Description
Excerpt from The Microscope: Its History, Construction, and Application, Being a Familiar Introduction to the Use of the Instrument, and the Study of Microscopical Science In issuing a tenth edition, the Author, by a careful revision of the text, and by an addition of no fewer than fifty new woodcuts, trusts that his book has been made more acceptable and useful to those for whom it was originally intended. Part I. Has been almost wholly rewritten and rearranged. To Mr. Frank Crisp the Author is indebted for Professor Abbe's theory of microscopic vision. To the processes of hardening, section-cutting and staining much in vogue, and which have created a new era in physiological studies, have been assigned the space they seem to merit. Part II. Has been carefully revised; 8. Chapter added on the application of the microscope to mine logical and spectroscopical analysis, and the examina tion of potable water. That his book may for some years to come be found a familiar introduction to the use of the microscope, and the study of microscopical science, is the earnest wish of the Author.
