Book Description
"The Merchant of Venice" is the story of Antonio, the drama's title character, and his friend Bassanio. Bassanio is in need of money so that he may woo Portia, a wealthy heiress. Bassanio asks Antonio for a loan and Antonio agrees to this loan, however all his money is tied up in shipping ventures. Together the two go to Shylock, a Jewish moneylender, to request a loan for Bassanio to be guaranteed against Antonio's shipping ventures. Shylock agrees to the loan at no interest in the condition that if the debt is not repaid Shylock may collect a pound of Antonio's flesh. At the same time Portia, who is being wooed by various suitors, is upset over a curious stipulation in her father's will regarding the man that she may marry.

Book Description
The Merry Wives of Windsor or Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy by William Shakespeare first published in 1602, though believed to have been written in or before 1597. The Windsor of the play's title is a reference to the town of Windsor, also the location of Windsor Castle, in Berkshire, England. Though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV or early in the reign of Henry V, the play makes no pretense to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan era English middle class life. It features the character Sir John Falstaff, the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV, Part 1 and Part 2. It has been adapted for the opera at least ten times. The play is one of Shakespeare's lesser-regarded works among literary critics. Tradition has it that The Merry Wives of Windsor was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. After watching Henry IV Part I, she asked Shakespeare to write a play showing Falstaff in love.

Book Description
One critic of the Merry Wives of Windsor argues that no longer does Shakespeare endow the fat knight [Falstaff] with the nimble wit that enabled him in the earlier plays to extricate himself from every embarrassing situation (Wright, xii). The result is a fast-paced farce (Green, Introduction, lxiv) which bears traits of Italian comedy (Green, lxviii). Bate agrees that the play is Shakespeares nearest approach to farce or sitcom (Introduction, ix). There are obvious oversights in the play which may argue for its hasty composition at the behest of Queen Elizabeth. However, as Green writes, Surely Shakespeare deserves some forgiveness for the abundance of loose ends in the play lxxvi). Certainly no Midsummer Nights Dream, the Merry Wives of Windsor does propound a pleasant evening at the theatre.
