Book Description
Excerpt from Restoration of the American Mercantile Marine It is not the purpose of your Committee to deal in statistics which prove what all interested parties must admit, that the American ag is rapidly disappearing from the ocean, and will soon be unknown on the high. Seas, unless our Govern ment rescinds hostile legislation and enacts laws to enable it to compete with our great rival in the carrying trade - Great Britain. We deem it proper, however, to state that the total tonnage of the United States employed in foreign trade fell from tons in 1860 to tons during the year ending June 30, 1880, showing a decrease of nearly 45 per cent. The decadence is more clearly indicated, however, bystatistics showing the movement of tonnage, which prove that the foreign commerce of the country has increased rapidly. The increase in British tonnage, entered since the year 1856, has been tons, while there have been also large gains in the tonnage entries under the ags of Germany, Sweden, Norway, Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Belgium and Russia. This statement, authorized by official statistics, proves where our foreign carrying trade has gone. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This volume is an attempt to trace the history of the Mercantile Marine, and to show the reader how much we owe to our ancestors for the ingenuity, enterprise, courage and perseverance by which the Merchant Service has been built up for the good of nations, the increase of trade and the spread of civilization. It is high time that the public appreciated all that is meant by the term Mercantile Marine. Edward Keble Chatterton, British marine expert and author of many naval books, describes in detail the history of the Mercantile Marine. Reprint of the original edition from 1923.
