Book Description
Various experimental techniques have been developed to recover droplet size distributions emitted from rotary atomizers. These techniques include both single line-of-sight measurements through the center of the spray cloud and volume weighted averaging from multiple passes through portions of the spray. Because the droplet size distribution of a spray is one of the most important inputs into aerial spray prediction models such as AgDRIFT®, a consistent, widely-accepted standard for rotary atomizers should be developed and implemented with regard to this measurement. No such standard currently exists. The present paper summarizes current measurement techniques and develops a simple computer model to predict droplet movement following emission from a rotary atomizer in a wind tunnel. Qualitative comparisons are made with available data to demonstrate the effects of single line-of-sight measurements and weighted averaging from multiple passes.

Book Description
In evaluating fuel nozzle performance, the droplets size distribution - frequently characterized by the Sauter mean diameter - is found to be one of the dominant parameters. Using examples from ongoing experimental studies with pressurized and airblast atomizers, attention is directed towards the importance of flow parameters and size distribution in applying non-intrusive optical techniques. In particular, an optical diffraction-type particle sizer has been used in analyzing fuel sprays from airblast and pressure atomizers. It is shown that the Sauter mean diameter alone is generally not suited for describing the nozzle performance. Emphasis is directed towards the influence of the flow field on the apparent droplet size distribution explaining a variety of observations reported in other studies. (Author).

Book Description
A laboratory method was developed for determining the droplet size distribution produced by atomizers. The atomizer is placed in a tube in which air is flowing at a velocity of 10 m/sec. The droplets flow downstream around a rod which has one flat surface covered with soot and a thin layer of magnesium. The rod is enclosed in a cylindrical shutter which can be rapidly opened to expose the soot-magnesium surface to the droplets which upon impact leave traces which can be studied microscopically. The instrument was tested with glycerine-water mixtures and an aerosol generator. The droplet distributions obtained were in good agreement with measurements made by two other methods.

Book Description
A one-dimensional imaging probe was used to measure samples of the spray distribution produced by four different rotary atomizers operating at several different flow rates and rotary speeds using tap water and vegetable oil as carriers. The operating characteristics of the laser imaging probe affected the data collection results. The warm-up interval, effective sampling width, droplet velocity, and spray density were the most critical factors. Each rotary atomizer produced a range of droplet sizes for which uniformity depended on the operating conditions and liquid carrier. At water flow rates below 0.5 L/min, the Micron Micromax produced the most uniform droplet distributions. At rates above 0.5 L/min of water, the Spraying Systems RotoJet produced the most uniform droplet distributions. A larger selection of volume median diameters was produced using vegetable oil rather than water as the carrier. The uniformity of the droplet distributions is controlled better with oil. The RotoJet produced the most uniform droplet distribution with oil in comparison with the other atomizers. There was little difference between water and oil as carries in the drift potential at low rotational speeds. However, at higher operating speeds the drift potential was reduced by using oil as the liquid carrier.

Book Description
A water spray, from a twin-fluid atomizer, was studied at different air temperature and at atmospheric pressure. The Sauter Mean Diameter, D32, and the droplet volume distribution were measured at four different distances from the injector. An optical method was used to measure droplet sizes. Predictions of the Sauter Mean Diameter, liquid volume concentration and droplet size distribution were also evaluated. The influence of the air velocity, air temperature and of the water flow rate in the spray S.M.D. and in the liquid volume concentration at different distance from the injector have been measured. The predictions showed good agreement with experimental results.
