Book Description
Excerpt from The Matriculation Albums of the University of Glasgow: From 1728-1858 William Innes Addison was born in the parish Of Brechin in Forfarshire on 22nd March, 1857. Although he was the eldest son of the family, he did not take to his father's occupation of farming, for, after his school-days were over, led by some dim feeling or presentiment of what was needed for his future work, he became, at the age of fourteen, an articled apprentice to Messrs. Shiress Whitson, solicitors in Brechin, with whom he spent four years engaged in the usual routine Of elementary work in a law Office. The next four years saw him in Edinburgh, gaining fruitful experience in business and in the study of Law at the University. In July, 1875, he joined the staff in the office of Mr. A. Kirk Mackie, who was for many years Solicitor and Secretary to the Edinburgh Merchant Company, with its Schools and Colleges, and Legal Adviser with regard to the Company's Estates. During the first eighteen months he was employed in general work, including conveyancing, accounts and correspondence, and in preparing Abstracts of the Feu Rights contained in many volumes of Chartularies, extending over 150 years, and referring to feuing estates in at least five different counties in Scotland. He was afterwards appointed chief cashier, and in this capacity had from to per annum passing through his hands. This included the collection of the income of the Merchant Company and several of its endowed Schools and Colleges, and the payment of Salaries to Teachers, allowances to Foundationers, and annuities to Widows, besides large capital payments for loans, purchases of property, and banking transactions. In the stress Of these onerous duties he did not allow his attention to be absorbed by the details of business, but showed a desire to obtain a grasp of the principles of his profession. With this view, hard pressed though he was in his daily work, he found time for study, and attended the classes of Scots Law and Conveyancing, gaining Honours in the latter. In 1879 he removed to Glasgow and entered the chambers of Messrs. James Ritchie, Maclean Co. With this firm and their successors he remained eight years, with entire charge of the Cash and Book-keeping departments, besides taking a substantial share in strictly law business and in the administration of numerous and wealthy Trusts. In this period some matters of special interest fall to be noted, viz. (1) his attendance at Arts Classes (humanity, English Literature, and Moral Philosophy) between 1880 and 1884; (2) his admission as a Notary Public in 1881; and (3) his marriage in 1885.
