Book Description
This book makes intelligible the wide range of electricity generating technologies available today, as well as some closely allied technologies such as energy storage. The book opens by setting the many power generation technologies in the context of global energy consumption, the development of the electricity generation industry and the economics involved in this sector. A series of chapters are each devoted to assessing the environmental and economic impact of a single technology, including conventional technologies, nuclear and renewable (such as solar, wind and hydropower). The technologies are presented in an easily digestible form.Different power generation technologies have different greenhouse gas emissions and the link between greenhouse gases and global warming is a highly topical environmental and political issue. With developed nations worldwide looking to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide, it is becoming increasingly important to explore the effectiveness of a mix of energy generation technologies.Power Generation Technologies gives a clear, unbiased review and comparison of the different types of power generation technologies available. In the light of the Kyoto protocol and OSPAR updates, Power Generation Technologies will provide an invaluable reference text for power generation planners, facility managers, consultants, policy makers and economists, as well as students and lecturers of related Engineering courses.· Provides a unique comparison of a wide range of power generation technologies - conventional, nuclear and renewable· Describes the workings and environmental impact of each technology· Evaluates the economic viability of each different power generation system

Book Description
This book takes an operational approach to the turbine relative to its function as part of an overall power plant. It focuses on principles, essential applications, and performance rather than construction, hardware, and design variation. It provides new sections on fuels, combustion, gas properties, and turbines in the gas engine.

Book Description
The worldwide potential of electric power generation from marine tidal currents, waves, or offshore winds is enormous. The high load factor resulting from the fluid properties and the predictable resource characteristics make tidal and wave energy resources attractive and advantageous for power generation and advantageous when compared to other renewable energies. The technologies are just beginning to reach technical and economic viability to make them potential commercial power sources in the near future. While only a few small projects currently exist, the technology is advancing rapidly and has huge potential for generating bulk power. Moreover, international treaties related to climate control and dwindling fossil fuel resources have encouraged us to harness energy sustainably from such marine renewable sources. Several demonstrative projects have been scheduled to capture tidal and wave energies. A number of these projects have now reached a relatively mature stage and are close to completion. However, very little is known to the academic world about these technologies beyond the basics of their energy conversion principles. While research emphasis is more towards hydrodynamics and turbine design, very limited activities are witnessed in power conversion interface, control, and power quality aspects. Regarding this emerging and promising area of research, this book aims to present recent results, serving to promote successful marine renewable energies integration to the grid or to standalone microgrids.

Book Description
This book covers the design, analysis, and optimization of the cleanest, most efficient fossil fuel-fired electric power generation technology at present and in the foreseeable future. The book contains a wealth of first principles-based calculation methods comprising key formulae, charts, rules of thumb, and other tools developed by the author over the course of 25+ years spent in the power generation industry. It is focused exclusively on actual power plant systems and actual field and/or rating data providing a comprehensive picture of the gas turbine combined cycle technology from performance and cost perspectives. Material presented in this book is applicable for research and development studies in academia and government/industry laboratories, as well as practical, day-to-day problems encountered in the industry (including OEMs, consulting engineers and plant operators).

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1920 edition. Excerpt: ...Suitable arrangement should also be made for pumping all dirty oil in the system overboard or to the settling tank. The oil end of the pump should have packing entirely metallic, as flax or other fibrous packing will get into the system and cause trouble. Settling and Gravity Tanks. These are located in the highest possible place. The oil runs from the gravity tank to the bearings, gears, thrusts, etc. It is important that it have a good pressure. The settling tanks are for the purpose that their name implies. All are fitted with suitable vent pipes and an overflow which leads to the drain tank, so that no wastage will occur. Heating coils are also fitted. Sight glasses are placed at various points so that the engineer may see if the oil is flowing properly. The Oil Cooler. As its name implies, it is for the purpose of properly cooling the oil before it is again returned to the bearings, thrust, gears, etc. Its usual location is between the oil pump and the overhead gravity tank. The strainers on the discharge side of the oil pump are just before it on the system. An ample supply of cooling water should be pumped through the tubes and the entire cooler cleaned at regular intervals. The pressure of the salt circulating water through the tubes should be less than the pressure of the surrounding oil. This is so that in case a tube should split or other leakage occur, there will be a loss of oil to the water side rather than the admittance of water to the oil system. For, the admittance of water to the oil, it will be remembered, tends to emulsify the oil. In many installations there are two coolers. By this arrangement one can be cleaned while the other is in operation and then kept in reserve. The oil in the system can be used over and over...
