When this number of the magazine appears, Xmas greetings will be on the. Way, so I take this opportunity to wish all students a happy holiday. I hope it will be a real holiday for all, despite the fact that for some examinations may seem to be just around the corner. If work has been done the holiday will come with the full est measure of relief and joy. Examinations will have no terrors. Looking back, a feeling that the session has been well begun should give one great satisfaction. I must leave the appraisal of work to others but of such things as student activities, student attitude and college atmosphere, perhaps I may be permitted to speak. These have much to do with college life, they are basic to college spirit and they may limit or extend college progress. Opinions vary as to what constitutes success in activities. Ful filment of purpose would appear to be a reasonable criterion and those who have the responsibility of direction may use it as a chart to guide them. Participation in so-called college activities is difficult for some but in one form or another should be possible for all. I sometimes think that it would be a good thing if every student were required to take part in at least one activity. Student attitude may be a delicate question but it is quite possible to sense earnestness, sincerity and loyalty. Excerpt from The Macdonald College Journal, Vol. 1: April 1941 My grandparents were old-fashioned folk who lived as much as they could within the pattern of the customs and ideals that had prevailed when they were young. Their farm had 160 acres of rich, rolling land. Thirty or forty acres were heavily timbered. The rest was in pasture or under cultivation. There were at least a few specimens of every common farm animal and fowl. Near a big orchard, with several varieties of apple, cherry, and plum trees, was a patch of currant and goose berry bushes, with strawberries and raspberries. A big garden, carefully tended, produced almost every vegetable you can name offhand. Not far from the kitchen door, Grandmother kept a small herb garden where mysterious plants flourished that wisely administered, could cure everything from chilblains to rheumatic fever.
