Book Description
Do you hear that mysterious knocking at the door? You peek outside, yet there’s no one there. You wonder if your mind is playing tricks on you, if perhaps you imagined it. But, before you even realize it, you’ve opened the door to malevolent and shadowy forces—energies we can’t fully comprehend, yet we know they are there. At some point, we've all felt the hairs on the back of our necks stand up, or experienced sudden waves of sadness, anger, or desolation. Haven’t you ever asked yourself that question? They are out there, lurking in the shadows—invisible, yet always present. Have you ever felt that you're being watched, as though someone is silently observing you? Even as we remain ignorant of so much about life, there is one undeniable truth: demons have been silent companions on our journey through the centuries. They are elusive entities, hiding at the edge of our understanding, immersed in the darkest mysteries. Through this cursed book, I will recount my own pilgrimage through the unknown, my quest for answers in the world of the occult and the sinister. This dictionary on demons takes an academic approach, grounded in rigorous historical, cultural, and scholarly research. Its primary purpose is to provide an objective and factual compilation of information about demons, exploring mythologies, cultural beliefs, and historical representations in a precise and documented manner. Within the pages of this illustrative dictionary, I will present a gallery of demonic entities as you have never seen them before. Accompanied by vivid illustrations and the most comprehensive information, these malevolent creatures will transport you to a world of mystery and darkness.
Lucifer's Lexicon: The Portable L.A. Rollins
Author: L. a. Rollins
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781943687176
Category : Humor
Languages : en
Pages : 208
Book Description
Inspired by Ambrose Bierce's The Devil's Dictionary, L.A. Rollins first unsheathed his lexicographer's lance in the pages of marginal political periodicals during the mid-1980s. At a time when Objectivist orthodoxy and Cold War political theater dominated libertarian discourse, Rollins' distinctive brand of irreverent irony stood out. He skewered shibboleths and dethroned dogmas from all quarters, and his trenchant jeu de mots made a lasting impression in the minds of many readers. In 1987, Loompanics Unlimited released the first edition of Lucifer's Lexicon, a freewheeling compilation of Rollins' satirical definitions--including content deemed too inflammatory for less adventurous publishers. Though the book would become a cult classic, Rollins' contrarian take on certain closely guarded historical and religious taboos chafed the sensibilities of some gatekeepers. Following its release, Rollins--who had previously courted controversy for his incisive critique of natural rights theory--was marked a pariah. The present edition is the first in a series of portable paperbacks being published by Nine-Banded Books and Underworld Amusements to chronicle the work of L.A. Rollins. With slight revision, it incorporates the "canonical" Loompanics text, now extensively supplemented to include never-before-published material that Rollins produced until his death in 2015. It is presented with a new introduction by individualist-anarchist blogger and Attack the System co-editor MRDA and a publisher's preface.

The Devil’s Dictionary
Author: Ambrose Bierce
Publisher: Standard Ebooks
ISBN:
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 341
Book Description
“Dictionary, n: A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” Bierce’s groundbreaking Devil’s Dictionary had a complex publication history. Started in the mid-1800s as an irregular column in Californian newspapers under various titles, he gradually refined the new-at-the-time idea of an irreverent set of glossary-like definitions. The final name, as we see it titled in this work, did not appear until an 1881 column published in the periodical The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. There were no publications of the complete glossary in the 1800s. Not until 1906 did a portion of Bierce’s collection get published by Doubleday, under the name The Cynic’s Word Book—the publisher not wanting to use the word “Devil” in the title, to the great disappointment of the author. The 1906 word book only went from A to L, however, and the remainder was never released under the compromised title. In 1911 the Devil’s Dictionary as we know it was published in complete form as part of Bierce’s collected works (volume 7 of 12), including the remainder of the definitions from M to Z. It has been republished a number of times, including more recent efforts where older definitions from his columns that never made it into the original book were included. Due to the complex nature of copyright, some of those found definitions have unclear public domain status and were not included. This edition of the book includes, however, a set of definitions attributed to his one-and-only “Demon’s Dictionary” column, including Bierce’s classic definition of A: “the first letter in every properly constructed alphabet.” Bierce enjoyed “quoting” his pseudonyms in his work. Most of the poetry, dramatic scenes and stories in this book attributed to others were self-authored and do not exist outside of this work. This includes the prolific Father Gassalasca Jape, whom he thanks in the preface—“jape” of course having the definition: “a practical joke.” This book is a product of its time and must be approached as such. Many of the definitions hold up well today, but some might be considered less palatable by modern readers. Regardless, the book’s humorous style is a valuable snapshot of American culture from past centuries. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
