Many years ago, during a long, confining illness in her native Australia, Margaret Stones whiled away the hours drawing the wildflowers friends placed at her bedside. Today she is acclaimed as one of the world's most distinguished botanical artists. Stones served for twenty-five years as the principal illustrator for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, contributing more than 400 drawings. She has also completed a six-volume illustrated work, The Endemic Flora of Tasmania, and has worked under commission for the Royal Botanical Gardens at Kew, England, the Royal Horticultural Society of England, and similar institutions the world over.In 1976, as part of the United States' bicentennial celebration, Louisiana State University commissioned Stones to execute six watercolor renderings of Louisiana flora. This initial project was so successful that Stones was asked to draw a much larger number of the state's native plants. Today Stones has completed more than 200 watercolors, all of which are maintained in the LSU Libraries' E. A. McIlhenny Natural History Collection. The drawings represent not only a collection of exquisite botanical art but an accurate scientific record of Louisiana's lush, varied, and beautiful flora.Flora of Louisiana reproduces the great bulk of Stones's collection. The volume contains more than 200 pages of full-color and black-and-white illustrations. Each drawing is accompanied by a short text that gives information about the plant, including a physical description and details about habitat and growing conditions.The publications of Flora of Louisiana is set to coincide with the first of several international exhibitions of Stones's drawings, beginning in April, 1991.

This illuminating book examines how the public funerals of major figures from the Civil War era shaped public memories of the war and allowed a diverse set of people to contribute to changing American national identities. These funerals featured lengthy processions that sometimes crossed multiple state lines, burial ceremonies open to the public, and other cultural productions of commemoration such as oration and song. As Sarah J. Purcell reveals, Americans' participation in these funeral rites led to contemplation and contestation over the political and social meanings of the war and the roles played by the honored dead. Public mourning for military heroes, reformers, and politicians distilled political and social anxieties as the country coped with the aftermath of mass death and casualties. Purcell shows how large-scale funerals for figures such as Henry Clay and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson set patterns for mourning culture and Civil War commemoration; after 1865, public funerals for figures such as Robert E. Lee, Charles Sumner, Frederick Douglass, and Winnie Davis elaborated on these patterns and fostered public debate about the meanings of the war, Reconstruction, race, and gender.

Julie Heffernan’s recent paintings imagine alternative habitats as creative responses to climate change. With waters rising all over the globe, Heffernan imagines worlds in trees or life on rafts in which undulating mattresses, tree branches, and road signs act as guides for the wayward journey. Construction zones interrupt the landscape, signaling places to stop and enter interior worlds, to reflect on the human condition—its feckless activity, violence, and failure. Heffernan reveals worlds within worlds, where her characters repurpose luxury items and safeguard bounties we cannot live without. Figures tending, nurturing, and creating suggest redemption—that we can adapt to a changed environment. With these paintings, Heffernan spells out the dilemma of climate change, but offers a vision of a creative sublime to carry us forward. Julie Heffernan received her MFA in Painting from Yale and a BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is represented by Catharine Clark in San Francisco and P.P.O.W. in New York. This richly illustrated volume documents in detail the exhibition "New Orleans Music Observed: The Art of Noel Rockmore and Emilie Rhys" at the New Orleans Jazz Museum from January 30, 2020 to September 1, 2021, curated by the museum's own David Kunian and expanded upon in this book by Emilie Rhys (wearing several hats as contributing artist, contributing writer, co-editor, photo editor, layout designer, and publisher). Noel Rockmore, well-known in New Orleans for his mid-1960s oil portraits of Preservation Hall musicians, and his daughter Emilie Rhys, whose artwork of contemporary musicians all around town has gained her recent public notice, are brought together for their first joint exhibition in which a selection of their drawings and paintings is paired with a wide variety of artifacts and historic instruments, culled mostly from the Jazz Museum's incomparable archives. As the curator of this profusely illustrated book, Emilie Rhys not only provides a visual record of the exhibition, she expands upon it through the presentation of significant new material by several Louisiana natives who are close observers of the vibrant cultural life that makes New Orleans a veritable global magnet. They are novelist, journalist, and art collector John Ed Bradley; print and public radio journalist Gwen Thompkins; and scientist and art collector Myles Robichaux. For the lead chapter in this book, Bradley has written the first ever literary exploration of the intertwined lives of Rockmore and Rhys, "Picture in a Picture: Noel Rockmore and Emilie Rhys in New Orleans." In Chapter 3, Robichaux's original essay speaks to the profound impact on him of discovering Rockmore's art in 2002 and meeting Rhys in 2011. For Chapter 4, "Depiction/Being Depicted," Thompkins conducted interviews in 2020 with 14 musicians exploring their interest in visual art, their thoughts about the development of their own image, and how they feel about their image appearing in drawings, paintings, and photographs by visual artists. The book has 368 illustrations including 302 in full color, a large number of which have never been seen in public previously and have been selected by Rhys, many from her extensive personal archives.
