Book Description
At an exclusive Long Island yacht club, a police lieutenant and his investigator are trapped in a web of disappearances and deaths that link club members to Washington, the Coast Guard, and the underworld. An excerpt from Unsafe Harbor-- Cautious, he headed for shore and shallow water dragging the line. The magnet and object moved without encountering rock. Having no desire to share his treasure, Luke searched the shore, the bluffs and tree line to assure no one watched. This will be a secret for now. Seeing no one, he smiled from greed and scolded himself. At 6-feet depth, he saw the magnet attached to a long, dark object. What was it? The object did not look like a treasure chest. Images distorted underwater. Was it British cannon from the Revolutionary War? A British base was in Huntington Harbor. The cannon had to be valuable to a collector. History made it treasure. Wild with curiosity, Luke stared at the catch seeking identification as it moved towards shallow water until the depth was 3-feet. Then Luke's eyes widened and his breath stuck. The magnet attached to a chain wrapped around a man with his hands tied behind his back.

Book Description
This edited volume focuses on civil-military relations before and during great power conflicts, and comprises historical case studies of modern supreme leadership. It aims to provide a guide for the future by shining a light on what worked and what failed in the civil-military relationships that steered great powers during the last era of rapid global change. While future civil-military relationships will have to adapt to the current global environment, the past remains, as always, a prelude. Thus, crucial concepts that underpin all such relationships are eternal and are waiting to be drawn out by historians trained to examine and present them to those who can put them to immediate good use. This volume demonstrates the relevance of history in every chapter, as readers will see parallels to today’s problems throughout every case study. The world is entering an age of great challenges, many of which require nations – particularly the most powerful – to establish civil-military relationships capable of navigating dangerous currents without a repeat of the calamities reminiscent of the last century. Each chapter focuses on a particular civil-military relationship as it developed before and during a great war. The editors have gathered leading experts on each of these periods to produce a concise but thorough essay on each relationship's intricacies. This book will be of much interest to students of military and strategic studies, military history and international relations, as well as professional miliary colleges and policymakers.

Book Description
John Gaitha Browning was a 30-year-old artist when he joined the Army, and he did not cease to be an artist just because he had become a soldier. The extraordinary journal he kept during his two years in the South Pacific records the plight of any artist at war: "We are a lonely lot who ignore so many things and dream of a day when we will be free to create beauty again". Browning also brought to Army life his many years of experience (some while a Boy Scout) working among Native Americans, learning their lore and handiwork. Many entries in this journal are fascinating comparisons between them and the New Guinea and Philippine natives. Although his love of art and culture sometimes left him at odds with the youngest soldiers, he was determined to make a written and visual record of whatever "good and beautiful" he found amidst the confusion and destruction of war. The journals begin on February 6, 1943 in Fort Ord, California; cover Browning's journey to Australia aboard the U. S. Army Transport Willard A. Holbrook; his adventures in Brisbane and Cairns, and then New Guinea; and his combat experience in the Philippines during the spring and summer of 1945.
