Book Description
First published in 1989 and taking place in downtown Toronto, one of the earliest of the modern urban fantasies, Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light is the story of a fight against encroaching darkness by a developmentally handicapped young woman, a street musician with no idea of his potential, a bag-lady who's tired of picking up the pieces, and an adept of the light. Mixing actual Toronto ghost-stories with traditional Faire, a police procedural, and a cat, Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light opened a gate at street level to the urban fantasy that followed. REVIEWS "A mentally disadvantaged young woman who sees what other people don't, a street musician, a social worker, and a bag-lady join forces with an 'Adept of the Light' to fight the encroaching darkness that stalks the streets of modern Toronto. In a departure from the 'strict' fantasy of Child of the Grove (LJ 5/15/88) and The Last Wizard, Huff's real-world fantasy presents an enlightened, compassionate view of the forgotten heroes of urban society. Highly recommended." --Library Journal

Book Description
Circle of Light is a story of shadows. Madison Sinclair has a power. Growing inside her since childhood, it has molded her life and the lives of everyone around her. Struggling to understand and master this force, she balances on the edge of evil. Her intimate relationship with God is challenged by her obsession with the occult until a confrontation with a demon brings her choices sharply into focus. Her obsession becomes a vow to use whatever gift shes been given to fight the Dark One and discourage others from following the treacherous path of black magic. Plagued by constant fear, Madison struggles to uncover the reason behind her many dark encounters and to find purpose and sanity in this unnatural existence. Enlisting the help of her friends, she embarks on a journey to the other side of reality. Protecting herself with The Light, she tries desperately to bring into focus the shadowy presence that fills her mind. Life ensues, detouring her magical apprenticeship with a failed marriage and a near fatal accident. Finally, after thirty-three years, she realizes in a moment of crystalline clarity that this power cannot be possessed, and that only the Creator has dominion over her fate. She turns her back on her obsession with one final promise to God. Or at least, she tries to. Written roman a clef, this supernatural thriller is based on personal experiences. In this age where media romanticizes the occult, I felt compelled to show others what life looks like from inside the crystal ball. My coworker no longer yearns for special abilities now that shes read my tale.

Book Description
Around 200,000 years ago, an emergency crash landing on Earth left the surviving crew of an Alvar star ship stranded. They rapidly discovered Earth was one of several worlds across the galaxy where their government had exiled their worst criminals, known as “Outcasts.” Faced with this somber news, the Alvar decide they must do whatever it takes to prevent the wreckage of their star ship from falling into the hands of the Outcasts. Through accident or design, they alter the Earth’s makeup and timeline in such a way that they inadvertently give rise to the Homo genus, including Neanderthals and Homo sapiens. After the crash, the crew is divided into two camps – one deciding to remain in stasis with the wreckage, and the other deciding to establish a colony out on the surface of Earth. Thus, the two groups separate. Circle of Light follows the group of Exiles, as they call themselves, who leave to establish their colony on the surface, and their adventures as they seek to defend their remaining tech and wipe out the Outcasts. Their culture and actions help to further develop Homo sapiens, with the intent to shape them into vessels for their spirits to dwell after, as they must, they pass and reincarnate. By doing this they believe they can maintain a watchfulness over their adopted world. Read of their new world, and their story – elements of which might seem familiar to some – and their adventures as they wait for their mother planet to come rescue them.
