Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 2 Creako's return was what he himself truly calls it, tbe beginning of a new life to him which was to be governed by new maxims, and a new kind of policy, yet so as not to forfeit his old character. He had been made to feel in what hands the weight of power lay, and what little dependence was to be placed on the help and support of his aristocratical friends: Pom pey had served him on this important occasion very sincerely, and with the concurrence also of Cesar, so as to make it a point of gratitude, as well as prudence, to be more observant of them than he had hitherto been. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 1 of 2 My object has been to exhibit Cicero not only as an orator and a politician, but as he was in private life, surrounded by his family and fi'iends speaking and acting like other men in the ordinary affairs of home. And the more we accustom ourselves to re gard the ancients as persons of like passions as our selves, and familiarize ourselves with the idea of them as fathers, husbands, friends, and gentlemen, the better we shall understand them. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 1 of 3 In drawing the characters of a number of persons, who all lived in the same city, at the same time, trained by the same discipline, and engaged in the same pursuits, -;as there must be many similar strokes, and a general resemblance in them all, so the chief dificulty will be, to prevent them from run ning into too great an uniformity. This I have endeavoured to do, not by forming ideal pictures, or such as would please or surprise, but by attending to the particular facts which his tory has delivered of the men, and tracing them to their source. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Cicero, Vol. 1 of 2 I conscious of a certain audacity in thus attempting to give a further life of Cicero which I feel I may probably fail in justifying by any new information; and on this account the enterprise, though it has been long considered, has been postponed, so that it may be left for those who come after me to burn or publish as they may think proper - or should it appear during my life I may have become callous through age to criticism. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero More than a century has elapsed since Middleton first published his "History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero," which has during that period exclusively occupied the field in this country as the Biography of Cicero. It occurred to me that the time had come when another Life might be acceptable to the public. The advanced state of scholarship, which has made the history and literature of Rome so much better understood than when Middleton wrote, - to say nothing of his defects as a biographer, - justifies the appearance of a new account of the great Roman. The faults of his work are not inconsiderable. It is disfigured by a blind and indiscriminating tone of panegyric which is the language of flattery rather than of truth. It is almost entirely occupied with Cicero as a politician and an orator, and does not sufficiently enter into the details of his private and domestic life, which, in my opinion, form the chief charm of a biography.
