Book Description
Excerpt from Cardinal Ximenes: Statesman, Ecclesiastic, Soldier and Man of Letters With an Account of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible The year 1917 marks the quadricentennial of the death of Cardinal Ximenes, one of the makers of modern Spain, and of the commencement of the Lutheran Reformation. Luther and Ximenes were, of course, at Opposite poles in religious matters, but each was responsible for epoch making changes in their respective countries. An attempt is made in the following pages to sketch the salient events in the history of a man, who, in so many varied spheres, dominated the life of his time. I am indebted, in common with every other writer on the subject, for most of the facts connected with his life to the biography published in 1569 by Gomez, as there is practically no other available source of reliable informa tion. Other material in the shape of manuscripts must undoubtedly exist in Spain, and these sources would well repay careful research and investigation by anyone to whom the necessary facilities might be afforded. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Cardinal Vaughan, Vol. 1 The task I had undertaken suddenly became strangely simple. I have been able to reserve for my self the very humblest role - just selecting and ar ranging the documents and supplying as many con necting and explanatory pages as seemed necessary in the case of each. For the rest, I have tried to write an absolutely candid book, without reserves and without suppressions, describing the man as he was, in his strength and in his weakness, with his gifts and his limitations. Certainly if I have not been candid I am without excuse. During the years since Cardinal Vaughan died I have lived, as it were, in constant companionship with him, with my mind saturated with his thoughts, reading his familiar letters, noting his intimate diaries, and tracking him through all the windings of the great public contro versies in which he was engaged. But in the case of this happy biographer there has been no disillusion ment: the Cardinal's papers held no disconcerting surprises; and the affection and reverence which went out to him so freely in his life have but widened and deepened in death.
