Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: September 28, 1935 I have no thought here of discussing, in detail, all of the ways in which I think the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as taught by the Latter-day Saints, when translated into life makes its votaries better. I would not have time for such a task. But there have come to me, in the contemplation of this address, some thoughts with respect to this subject which I would like to express. It has seemed to me that at least two principles might be examined and be profitable for consideration for a few moments. One of the fundamental teachings of the Church is the one with respect to home. We have been from the beginning a home building and a home-loving people. Notwithstanding all that some of our critics have said, we are happy and proud to be judged by the fruits of the homes of members of the Mormon Church. We believe that the home is the basic unit of our social life, and when properly commenced here, will endure throughout eternity; and that the sacred relationship of husband and wife, parent and child, continues to the faithful so long as life exists, and that is through all eternity. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 97: September 26, 1935 In my first talk I suggested that there were certain kinds of truth and reality which could be reached, not by scientific methods, but only by a readiness to experience, a committing of our personality, a coming right off the fence once for all. That, it seems to me, and nothing less, is faith. It is not so much merely I believe as I trust. It is a quite definite psycho logical process which we all exercise more or less consciously in relation to more or less worthy objects every day. It is obviously different from and greater than mere credulity, and also distinct from passive suggestibility, chiefly because it inevitably leads to action. Psychology is not directly concerned with the objects of faith, but it can say that the active and purposeful committal to some worthy ideal or purpose is a necessary factor for growth and development. Healthy religion quite agrees, saying that faith without works is dead. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: September 7, 1933 From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain, but osie flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asun er. The duty of parents to children who are born to them in wed lock is definitely defined. Parents are under obligation most solemn to instruct, train, and provide for their children. If they are indifferent or negligent and the children become evil or wicked, the parents are held responsible. Children are to honour their parents, obey them in righteous ness, and comply with their just demands. From the beginning, civil laws have existed which have made it obligatory upon those who entered into the bonds of matri mony to observe these sacred obligations of husband to wife, wife to husband, parents to children, and children to parents. The violations of these sacred obligations are made punishable offenses, and compliance with them is obligatory.
