Book Description
Excerpt from The Last Battle of the Soul in Death It may be said, that the remembrance of him has been kept alive in the public mind from generation to generation, almost entirely from it being generally believed that he translated the whole Bible into verse; for we may ask, who is there of any retensions to literary or antitpuarian lore, that has not heard of Zachary Boyd's Bib e? Some efforts have recent y been made to retrieve his history from the unmerited neglect which it has met, * and the particulars that have been brought to light must be con sidered valuable. If the present attempt to increase our limited stock of knowledge, shall be instrumental in leading others to pursue a similar course, they are but doing justice to the memory of one who has strong claims on our attention and respect, as a benefactor to learning, a friend to religion and to the cause of humanity, in being at great pains to direct men through life by his counsels, and to soften their pillow in their last hours. We may remark, that it is much to be regretted the obscurity into which has fallen the history of many other distinguished men, whose memorials, had they been seized upon by some friendly hand at the proper time, would have spared much of the trouble and uncertainty experienced, when exertions are made to rescue their names from oblivion. No incitement should be necessary to induce to such la bour, as biorrraphy is of itself a useful auxiliary to the interests of literature generally, and ought therefore to be assiduously cultivated; while another important advantage to be derived is, that the mode of existence, or the manner in which eminent men have Spent their lives, often reads to mankind lessons more useful and impressive, than those writings to which they have trusted for immortality. Book Description
By the end of the fifteenth century, Florence was well established as the home of the Renaissance. As generous patrons to the likes of Botticelli and Michelangelo, the ruling Medici embodied the progressive humanist spirit of the age, and in Lorenzo de' Medici they possessed a diplomat capable of guarding the militarily weak city in a climate of constantly shifting allegiances. In Savonarola, an unprepossessing provincial monk, Lorenzo found his nemesis. Filled with Old Testament fury, Savonarola's sermons reverberated among a disenfranchised population, who preferred medieval Biblical certainties to the philosophical interrogations and intoxicating surface glitter of the Renaissance. The battle between these two men would be a fight to the death, a series of sensational events—invasions, trials by fire, the 'Bonfire of the Vanities', terrible executions and mysterious deaths—featuring a cast of the most important and charismatic Renaissance figures. In an exhilaratingly rich and deeply researched story, Paul Strathern reveals the paradoxes, self-doubts, and political compromises that made the battle for the soul of the Renaissance city one of the most complex and important moments in Western history.

Excerpt from The Divine Authority of the Old and New Testament Asserted Pretenfion to this Charaéter. I would be one Of the lafl to charge any Man with a Want of Honefiy and Sincerity: but there are ma ny Things in his Book that look like a wilful Perverfion and Mifreprefentation of Faéts, as well as Arguments and fometimes fo circum fianced, that it is fcarce pofiible for the molt extenfive Charity to fuppofe that it'was owing to mere Ignorance. Perhaps the Author him felf would not be willing to accept of this A pology. I cannot help looking upon it as an Honour to Chrifiianity, that its Adveifaries find themfelves obliged to take fuch Methods as thefe, in order to carry on their Defigns a gainft it. Does not this argue a fecret Con fcioufnefs that they can never prevail by a fair Attack upon the Scriptures For furely he muf't be either very wicked or very foolilh, that would have recourfe to fuch bafe Arts as thefe to ferve his Caufe, if he thought his End could be anfwered without it, and that fair and juft Reafoning, and an equal candid Ma nagement would do as well. Book Description
The New York Times–bestselling alternative history of the Civil War reaches its thrilling climax in this “swiftly paced and authentically grounded novel” (Booklist). After his great victories at Gettysburg and Union Mills, General Robert E. Lee fails to attain final victory with his attack on Washington, D.C. But even as Union General Dan Sickles secures Washington, he and his valiant Army of the Potomac are trapped and destroyed. For Lincoln there is only one hope left: that General Ulysses S. Grant can save the Union cause. It is now August 22, 1863. Lee must conserve his remaining strength while maneuvering for the killing blow that will take Grant’s army out of the fight. Pursuing the remnants of the defeated Army of the Potomac up to the banks of the Susquehanna, Lee is caught off balance when news arrives that General Ulysses S. Grant, in command of more than seventy thousand men, has crossed that same river, a hundred miles to the northwest at Harrisburg. As General Grant brings his Army of the Susquehanna into Maryland, Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia maneuvers for position. Grant first sends General George Armstrong Custer on a mad dash to block Lee’s path toward Frederick and with it control of the crucial B&O railroad. The two armies finally collide in Central Maryland, and a bloody week-long battle ensues along the banks of Monocacy Creek. This must be the “final” battle for both sides.
