Two-stage photodissociation of molecules by laser radiation for selective bond breaking in molecules involves irradiation of a molecule by two laser pulses of different frequencies. One radiation is in resonance with the vibrational-rotational transition of the molecule and effects an oscillatory molecular excitation. The second radiation effects photodissociation of the oscillation-excited molecules. In practice the first radiation must be in the infrared region and the second in the ultraviolet. The relationships between the parameters of infrared and ultraviolet radiation which make it possible to satisfy this requirement, i.e., to obtain a considerable yield of the products of photodissociation with low losses of the energy of laser radiation are found.
