Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Hygiene, 1901, Vol. 1 Grassi has repeatedly asserted that the geographical distribution of the genus Anopheles in Italy coincides with that of malaria. Even in his most recent publication he lays special stress upon the coincidence, and considers that what he claims will probably hold true all over the world. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Hygiene, 1910, Vol. 10: With Index to Vols. I-X (1901-1910) After this work was continued in Cambridge on normal birds which reached us alive, and on sickly birds caught alive, immediately killed and packed in ice and sent to us from time to time from various moors as occasion offered. During the visits to Scotland it was, of course, not possible to carry out all the precautionary measures which are described later as having been taken when working in our own laboratories at Cambridge, but the most important of these precautions were observed, such, for example, as plucking the birds before they were brought into the laboratory, the free use of the flame for singeing, and of the actual cautery for destroying any stray particles of feather and for burning the skin through which the incisions were made. In the preliminary experiments also the method of getting at the lungs from behind, which is described later, was adopted; and emulsions of the organs were made between sterilised plates, but the glass frame, in which this was done at Cambridge, had not been adopted at the time of the earlier experiments. One of the first objects of the experiments was to seek for Klein's bacillus and to compare it with other members of the colon group in the light of the great advances in bacteriology since Klein's observations were made 18 years ago. Our next was to look for characteristic lesions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Journal of Hygiene, 1912, Vol. 11 The present paper contains the results of an enquiry into the differentiation of certain organisms of varying source, which present characters more or less closely allied to those of the mannite or Flexner type of the dysentery bacillus. The non-mannite type, first discovered by Shiga in 1898, as the cause of certain forms of bacillary dysentery in Japan, and later by Kruse in 1901, as the cause of epidemic dysentery in Rhenish West phalia, has been shown to remain remarkably true to type, and our present cultural and serological methods amply suffice to separate it off clearly from the mannite or Flexner type. We are, in fact, justified in speaking of the Shiga bacillus of Dysentery. It is other wise with the mannite-fermenting type. The work of the last ten years in various countries has elicited the fact that the bacillus discovered by Flexner in Manila in 1901 must be regarded merely as a type of a group comprising an ever-increasing number of strains differing in certain properties from the type-strain, and from each other. The members, or sub-types, of the mannite-fermenting group, which have been most thoroughly investigated are Flexner's bacillus, the Y bacillus of Hiss and Russell discovered in 1904, and the bacillus of Strong.
