Excerpt from The Journal of Cancer Research, 1917, Vol. 2 The literature on tumors in mice does not furnish satisfactory information concerning the frequency of sarcomas among them. Statistics on other animals indicate that with most species, as with man, sarcoma is much less common than carcinoma. Caspar (1), in his review on the tumors of animals, published twenty years ago, makes the statement that sarcomas behave in animals quite the same as the corresponding tumors in man, and are more malignant than carcinomas, with much more extensive metastasis and rapid post-operative recurrence. They are, according to the literature reviewed by him, the moat common tumors of dogs and horses, but it is to be considered that in the earlier literature there are many granulomas mistakenly diagnosed as sarcoma. Frohner (2), in 644 operated tumors in dogs, found 44 sarcomas. In rats, sarcomas seem to be especially frequent. McCoy (3) found, in 100,000 rats killed in plague work, 103 tumors, of which 30 were diagnosed as sarcomas and 18 fibromas. Of the sarcomas, 18 were found in the liver, 5 in the subcutaneous tissues, and 5 in the mesentery, and 1 each in the testicle and the pelvis. This predilection of the liver is corroborated by Woolley and Wherry (4) who found in 22 spontaneous tumors in rats, including 7 sarcomas, 3 sarcomas of the liver, which were, as in many of McCoy's cases, associated with parasites (5). This investigation was under taken to determine what changes occur in the principal organs of the animal body following such a treatment, and to afford data that might act as a guide in the treatment of certain types Of cancer, in which the solution method of radium therapy appeared particularly adapted. Excerpt from New York Medical Journal, Vol. 106: August 25, 1917 Rontgen rays and clinical and laboratory findings; 2, latent cancer which is usually advanced without any typical symptoms and can be diagnosed by the Rontgen. Ray readily; and 3, cases in which there is very little doubt about the diagnosis from a clinical standpoint. In early carcinoma the symptoms are obscure and there are usually few gastric symp toms. As a rule there is no obstruction, the acidity may be unchanged, there is no lactic acid, and there may be no blood in the gastric contents or stools. There is insufficient data to justify an exploratory operation. This class of cases must be examined very carefully by the Rontgen rays, and very often repeated exminations are necessary if the diagnosis is to be made in time to be of real value to patient and surgeon. In latent cancer the disease is far advanced with only one or more symptoms, and can usually be diagnosed by the rontgen rays. Often these cases are referred with the history of partial pyloric obstruction, and as there are no other symptoms, we are greatly surprised when the Rontgen examination reveals an advanced carci noma which is inoperable. A question frequently asked is: How early can gastric carcinoma be diagnosed by the Rontgen rays, or how early does gastric carcinoma reveal rontgen ological signs sufficient to justify an exploratory operation? Carman, who has had a large expe rience at the Mayo Clinic, answers this question as follows: Admitting that the only cure for cancer is early operation, early diagnosis is a matter of prime importance. Admitting also that there are no definite clinical findings in early cancer. The statement is warranted that next to the exploring finger of a trained surgeon. Rontgen rays will re veal more cancers in the early stages than any other diagnostic means. Iience. Every patient of cancer age with indefinite gastric symptoms should be sub jected to a Rontgen examination. But how earlv can cancer of the stomach be detected? That de pends upon, 1, the character of the cancer whether a frank tumor, an insidious infiltration, or a can cerous ulcer: 7 its situation; 3. The examiner's familiarity with the work. And. _t. Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1917, Vol. 154 Pain was very strikingly relieved in many of the cases; discharge diminished in quantity and odor. If the patient's symptoms improved, but the lesions did not Show improvement, the case was not considered improved. Unimproved means that the patient's lesions or symptoms or both were not improved and that the lesions steadily progressed despite treatment. Some of the cases showed such marked improvement under treat ment at first that although they subsequently died it was deemed important to call attention to this class of cases by tabulating them under the heading of primarily improved, subsequently died. Our experience has led us to expect certain cases to do very well under treatment at first and raise great hopes of recovery in the patient and the therapeutist. Such cases have frequently been reported in the literature during this stage of improvement, and not uncommonly the patients have relapsed and died by the time the reports have been published. Some cases are improved but still unde'r treatment, so that their ultimate results are not known. These are classified in the column improved, still under treat ment.
