Book Description
Excerpt from The Interpretation of History I have defined history as the sum Of the episodes that make up man's struggle for existence. In it, therefore, is included not only the combatant man, but the foes with which he has unceasingly to struggle - that is, not only his human competitors for the conditions of existence, but nature herself. The play of the world forces, whether regular, as they normally are.or convulsive, as upon occasion, are as much a part of history as the course of man's efforts to assert and maintain himself against all other powers. Book Description
Excerpt from The Interpretation of History But this does not mean that interpretations of history are nothing more than the injection into it of successive prejudices. It means progressive clarification: Each new theory that forces itself upon the attention of historians brings up new data for their consideration and so widens the field of investigation. The greater knowledge of our world to-day reveals the smallness of our knowledge of the past, and from every side scholars are hastening to make the content of history more worthy of comparison with the content of science. From this point of View, therefore, interpretation, instead of assum ing the position of a final judge of conduct or an absolute law, be comes only a suggestive stimulus for further research. Book Description
Excerpt from The Spiritual Interpretation of History History is more than the record of history. It is a phase of the universal process in which we live and of which we are: the continuous stream of human life flowing from times far more ancient than can be known from any written records. It is not composed of natural men with social compacts in their ghostly arms stalking from generalization to generalization, but of very real persons who loved and traded and fought. For this reason it is desirable that the inter preter of history should have helped, though only in some small but real way, to make it. Only thus can one thoroughly gain insight into the working of group consciousness. But if such participation in affairs is impossible the historian should continually remind himself that history does not wait upon philosophy. The interpreter of history faces not hypotheses but a never-ending attempt of human beings at the adven ture of living. Book Description
Excerpt from A Text Book of American History History is a record Of events that has affected the social welfare. The record of an event is incomplete without an ex planation of its causes and effects. Interpretation is an essen tial part of history. The statement of a fact is not history, but journalism. Generalizing upon facts not themselves recited is philosophy. But history is neither journalism nor philosophy Nor is it a sum of' biographies. A biographical event ects the man's welfare. Because it is of human interest, it not therefore necessarily of historical importance. An epitome of facts, a philosophy of events, or a body of biographical details is not a history, or a school history, how ever it may be entitled. History deals with events of general human interest, tracing them in their sequence and. Order, Show ing their causes and effects. History is essentially a method Of revealing the past by finding its truth and explaining it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Meaning of History: Two Lectures It is very amusing to hear what curious things they did in by-gone times. It is highly entertaining to know about forefathers of our own who were nearly as funny as Chinese. Then, again, it is very instructive as a study of character; we see in history the working of the human mind and will. Besides, it is necessary to avoid the blunders they committed in past days: there we collect a store of moral examples, and of political maxims; we learn to watch the signs of the times, and to be prepared for situations whenever they return. And it cannot be doubted, they add, that it is a branch of knowledge, and all knowledge is good. To know history, they conclude, is to be well-informed, is to be familiar with some of the finest examples of elegant and brilliant writing. Now, between the two, those who tell us plainly that history is of no use, and those who tell us vaguely that history is of fifty uses, I do not see much to choose. I thoroughly disagree with them both, and of the two I would rather deal with the former. Their opposition, at any rate, is concentrated into a single point, and may be met by a single and a direct answer. To them I would say, Are you consistent? Do you not in practice follow another course? In rejecting all connection with the facts and ideas of the past, are you not cutting the ground from under your own feet? You are an active politician and a staunch friend of the principles of the liberal party. What are the traditional principles of a party but a fraction, small, no doubt, but a sensible fraction of history? You are a warm friend of free trade. Well, but free trade has a history of its own; its strength lies in the traditions of a great victory achieved by right over might. You believe in the cause of progress. But what is the cause of progress but the extension of that civilization, of that change for the better which we have all witnessed or have learned to recognize as an established fact? Book Description
Excerpt from Economic Interpretation of History The lectures contained in this volume were delivered in the hall of the author's College (worcester, Oxford) in his capacity as lecturer in Political Economy to that Society. They were open to all members of the university, and were very numerously attended. I mention this, because, being printed as they were read, the fact may explain or excuse the various local allusions which they con tain, and the occasional repetitions of statement which will be found in them. The business of a lecturer is to teach as best he can. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
