Over the last sixty years scholars have increasingly become aware of links connecting early Greek poetry with the literatures of the ancient Near East. Over the last sixty years scholars have increasingly become aware of links connecting early Greek poetry with the literatures of Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Canaan, and Israel. Martin West's new book far surpasses previous studies in comprehensiveness, demonstrating these links with massive and detailed documentation and showing that they are much more fundamental and pervasive than has hitherto been acknowledged. His survey embraces Hesiod, the Homeric epics, the lyric poets, and Aeschylus, and concludes with an illuminating discussion of possible avenues of transmission between the orient and Greece. He believes that an age has dawned in which Hellenists will no more be able to ignore Near Eastern literature than Latinists can ignore Greek. -

Book Description
The studies assembled in this volume focus on two issues: firstly, the analysis and illustration of literary techniques employed by authors and compilers of the books of the Hebrew bible. In several instances, their development is followed into the early post-biblical Qumran writings and Apocrypha. Thus, the essays in this section relate to biblical literature qua literature, an issue which has especially attracted scholars in the field of recent times. In a second group of essays, the author sets out to probe the interconnection of literature and society in biblical Israel. Literary patterns, foremost motifs, are analyzed in the attempt to extract from them facets of underlying conceptual or speculative thought. Since biblical authors refrained, on the whole, from presenting systematically their world of ideas, the proposed evaluation of literary patterns may help in better gauging the conceptual universe of Israel in the biblical period

Book Description
In his fascinating new book, Bosnian academic and former statesman, Rusmir Mahmutcehajic, explores how men and women traditionally ordered their communities, architecture, and habits of life to reflect the divine order, and how this order is coming under attack in an increasingly secularized modern world. In reflecting on how his own hometown of Stolac, Bosnia, has been destroyed and then rebuilt in the aftermath of the tragic Bosnia war, he offers explanations as to how different religious communities can live peacefully together in the future.
