It is true, that Montaigne, Locke, Frœbel and Lancaster have laid down certain rules, which differ more or less in themselves; and as a whole are indefinite and unsuited to the altered circumstances of the present age. The object of this little work, is to set forth the opinions of recognized authorities on this subject, contrasting them, and adapting, them to our present social condition so as to eliminate the maximum of good, and to balance evenly their mental and physical relation in the important work of converting the child into the man.
