Book Description
The Suffolk Punch - that sturdy, compact draft horse of noble ancestry - was, until mechanisation, the powerhouse of the East Anglian farming community. In The Horse in the Furrow (1960), renowned social historian George Ewart Evans explores this potent symbol of a bygone era, and the complex network - farmer, horseman, groom, smith, harness-maker and tailor - which surrounded it. Evans charts a fascinating course, demonstrating the connectedness of husbandry, custom and dialect, and arguing for an organic, inclusive study of these aspects of rural life. In particular, the section on folklore sheds light on some of the most obscure practices, with the Punch standing proudly at its centre. With beautiful illustrations by Charles Tunnicliffe, The Horse in the Furrow is an engaging and subtle portrait of an animal at the heart of its community

Book Description
Excerpt from The Iron Furrow Lee Bryant was proceeding on important business - impor tant for him, anyhow. When everything one possesses is about to be risked on a venture, the matter is naturally vital and at this moment he was moving straight to the initiative of his enterprise. Where the road crossed the creek bed to continue north ward, a trail branched off and followed up the stream to the little ranch house by the three cottonwood trees. Here the creek had not yet begun to cut an arroyo and had washed merely a course five or six feet deep and some fifty feet wide through the mesa, so that from a distance the shallow gash was invisible and the ground appeared unbroken. It was because of the flat character of the mesa, too, that Bryant on reaching the bank of the stream was able to see on the oppo site side two persons a quarter of a mile ofl riding toward him; women, he perceived. Far north of them on the road, a black spot in a haze of dust, seemingly motionless but as one could guess advancing rapidly, was an automobile. Bryant rode his horse down into the creek bed and turned him aside to a small pool on the upper side of the crossing, under the cut-bank, where the horse thrust his muzzle into the water and drank greedily. The rider swung himself out of the saddle, knelt a pace beyond, Where the rivulet trickled into the pool, and also drank. Book Description
A good fat book for the Farnol followers with even the naughty characters having something good in their make-ups. Arrogant uncle Everard proposes to his two nephews that they prove themselves worthy of inheriting his fortune by spending a year without money, save the little with which he starts them off. Oliver and Roland fall in love with the same girl, have plenty of adventures, Oliver adopts a small girl, brings her to London to be cared for by his old teacher, learns his uncle is pursued by a maddened drug fiend of a son who tries to kill him, tries to prevent an attack on his uncle but is unsuccessful, find his uncle's lost wife and see Roland win the girl. Very boots-and-saddle-y with plenty of entertainment.
