Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero In the following history therefore, if I have happened to afl'irm anything that contradicts the common opinion and shocks the prejudices of the reader, I must desire him to attend diligently to the authorities on which it is grounded and if these do not give satisfaction, to suspend his judgment still to the end of the work, in the progress of which many facts will be cleared up that may appear at first perhaps uncertain and precarious: and in everything especially that relates to Cicero, I would recommend to him to contemplate the whole character, before he thinks himself qualified to judge of its separate parts, on which the whole will always be found the surest comment. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero More than a century has elapsed since Middleton first published his "History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero," which has during that period exclusively occupied the field in this country as the Biography of Cicero. It occurred to me that the time had come when another Life might be acceptable to the public. The advanced state of scholarship, which has made the history and literature of Rome so much better understood than when Middleton wrote, - to say nothing of his defects as a biographer, - justifies the appearance of a new account of the great Roman. The faults of his work are not inconsiderable. It is disfigured by a blind and indiscriminating tone of panegyric which is the language of flattery rather than of truth. It is almost entirely occupied with Cicero as a politician and an orator, and does not sufficiently enter into the details of his private and domestic life, which, in my opinion, form the chief charm of a biography. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 1 of 3 I DO not impute this to any fuperiority of fiarts 'or genius, peculiar to the Ancients; for uman nature has ever been the fame in all ages and nations, and owes the difference of its improvements, to a difference onely of culture, and of the rewards propofed to it's indufiry: where thefe are the moft amply provided, there we {hall always find the molt numerous and fhining examples of human perfection. In old Rome, the public honors were laid open to the virtue of every Citi zen which, by raifing them in their turns to the command of that mighty Empire, goduccd a race of Nobles, fuperior even to ings. This was a profpefi, that filled the foul of the ambitious, and roufed every fae culty of mind and body, to exert it's ut moft force whereas in modern fiates men's views being ufually confined to narrow bounds, beyond which they cannot pad? and a partial culture of their talents being fufiicient to procure every thing, that their ambition can afpire to, a great genius has feldom either room or invitation to fireteh itfelf to it's full fize. Book Description
Excerpt from Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Vol. 2 of 2 During this and the following year we have very few of Cicero's letters, which is explained by the fact that Atticus, his chief correspondent, was then at Rome. Atticus had made a journey into Greece and Asia Minor in the previous summer, but re turned in November, and the friends were together for the next two years. And as this work is not a history of Rome, but a biography of Cicero, and he took during the period little part in public affairs, we may pass rapidly over events with which he was not immediately concerned. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero The Life of Cicero, by Dr. Conyers Middleton, has long enjoyed an extensive and well-merited circulation. To the classical scholar, affording, as it does, a continued commentary upon the text, in the shape of copious notes, carefully transcribed from the works of the Orator, in addition to treating upon the minutest particulars of his history then known, and containing a mass of information derived from almost every available source with respect to the leading events of his time, it must always prove a valuable aid towards a thorough acquaintance with one of the most interesting periods. Other and no less obvious merits, notwithstanding the slight drawback presented in its decided and extravagant partiality, might easily be specified. With all its excellences, however, it is a work more suited, from its elaborate character, to the learned than either to the general reader, or to the student who may be desirous of making himself acquainted with the leading events in the Life of Cicero, without possessing leisure or curiosity sufficient to enter into the more extensive field of inquiry presented by the labours of Middleton.
