Book Description
Excerpt from The History of New France, Vol. 2 of 3 Ou the sea-coast which extends toward Florida, one hundred or six score leagues are wanting to show our whole voyage. These 1 would fain have represented here, but to do so would have taken too long, and the engraver has done well to provide me with the small number of maps here given. If my book reaches a second edition this defect can be remedied. In the meantime those interested have the advantage of this one, and of their courtesy will take it in good part. The map of 1609 was, however, reproduced unchanged in the editions of 1611-12, and 1617-18. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History and General Description of New France, Vol. 2 of 6 IN presenting the second volume of this history no remark seems necessary; yet to avoid a misconception on the part of some, it may be well to state explicitly that the notes in this edition, embracing all citations of authorities, are the work of the translator, excepting only the few occasional notes to which the name of Charlevoix is added in italics. It may also be added, as a guide to the reader, that the orthog raphy of proper names in the text is that given by Charlevoix. In the notes it is given as found in the autograph of the individual. Book Description
Excerpt from History of New France, Vol. 1 of 3 The settlement possessed a few domestic animals, but these appear to have required little care. We had pigs, says Lescarbot, which multiplied very considerably. Though they had a stable, they often slept out of doors, even in winter-time. We had only one sheep,1 but she thrived well, although she was not shut up at night, but was left out in the courtyard. She was twice sheared, and the second crop of wool was valued in France at two cents more per pound than the first. We had also chickens and pigeons, which failed not to pay the customary tribute and to increase in great numbers. Excerpt from Count Frontenac and New France Under Louis XIV, Vol. 2 of 2: France and England in North America While Montreal was thus assailed by land, Massa chusetts and the other New England colonies were invited to attack Quebec by sea, a task formidable in difficulty and in cost, and one that imposed on them an inordinate share in the burden of the war. Massachusetts hesitated. She had no money, and she was already engaged in a less remote and less critical enterprise. During the winter her commerce had snfiered from French cruisers, which found con venient harborage at Port Royal, whence also the hostile Indians were believed to draw supplies.
