Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Modern Painting, Vol. 4 of 4 50 long as the acquisition of sunlight was the point in question, representations from the life of artisans in town and country stood at the centre itself of artistic efforts, because the conception and technical methods of the new art could be tested upon them with peculiar success. And through these pictures painting came into closer sympathy with the heart-beat of the age. At an epoch when the labouring man as such, and the political and social movement in civilization, had become matters of absorbing interest, the picture of artisans necessarily claimed an important place in art; and one of the best sides of the moral value of modern painting lies in its no longer holding itself in indifference aloof from these themes. When the century began, Hector and Agamemnon alone were qualified for artistic treatment, but in the natural course of development the disinherited, the weary and heavily-laden likewise acquired rights of citizenship. In the passage where Vasari speaks of the Madonnas of Cimabue, comparing them with the older Byzantine Virgins, he says finely that the Florentine master brought more goodness of heart into painting. And perhaps the historians of the future will say the same about the art of the present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Modern Painting, Vol. 1 of 3 N 0 book, hitherto, has embraced the history of European painting in the nineteenth century. And modern art, like modern culture, is to be considered as a whole. The history of the art of our own country is not intelligible if one does not know of contemporary movements abroad. The gaze of the historian therefore must not be fixed upon one country alone, but must embrace Europe, - indeed, the whole world. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Painting, Vol. 4 of 8: The Renaissance in the North; And the Flemish Genius From the middle eleven-hundreds to the middle twelve hundreds, the practice of the arts passed from the monks to the artists outside the monastery walls. The legends of Charlemagne, of King Arthur and his knights, and of the Niebelungen, created a Wide literature and as wide endeavour in painting. Knights in armour, the pomp and panoply of war, and the gallantries took form; and the native humour of the race uttered itself in grotesques and drolleries, as the Romanesque sculpture and the whimsical ities of the miniatures reveal. The months and their attributes brought the artists to the treatment of the daily life about them and animals and the chase burst into the studio, and the horn of the hunter and the flying of the hawk took shape in pictures. At once the Byzantine stiffness gave way to the human action of figures arrayed in the costume of the day. The achievement of this age is chicfly in the miniatures of Manuscripts.
